The old computer seems to have taken it's last gasp, I can't get it going again.

Really quite sad.  :\\\'(

I'm sorry, larrabee.  At least you had this warning period before it died, so you didn't lose too many of your files.  Are you any closer to deciding what you'll replace it with?

Yes, that was a blessing. They backed it up when I took it into the shop initially so I have everything I think.
Just feels a little like loosing an old friend is all!  :-[

Ideally I would have spent the day in Currys again today trying to make the final decision but hubs is not well so I don't want to leave him alone.

Hi,

If you read all the 'horror stories' in the internet about certain laptops and brands etc, you'll never buy anything!

I've got an XPS15 I bought in late 2014, the highest spec available at the time and it's been 100% faultless. Other's have had issues. Some people have fantastic Apple Mac's and others who's units have plenty of problems and issues. A few good people I know are Apple service centre engineers and technicians and they're always busy fixing Apple products.

Depending on what you use the machine for, there's good machines in every price bracket and form factor. To reduce risk, as suggested buy from places like John Lewis, Costco where there's fantastic customer protection. If you are more confident in looking after your machine, then look at discounters like Ebuyer and other online retailers/specialist computer builders. PC World can be a good place to buy as well (aside from all the internet horror stories!)

Many will say it's important to get to know the feel of the laptop which is excellent advice. I personally don't need to go to that level as 99% of my usage is via a good bluetooth keyboard/mouse, however, when I am out and about with it, I do find the XPS great to use directly.

Good luck with everything once you buy!

Cheers, DtM ! West London & Slough UK!

Thanks DtM!  :)  Fingers crossed I'm lucky with whichever one I get!

I finally got fed up with myself and my lack of ability to make a decision and went ahead and bought the Envy. It was the easy option as that was what I had before!

It comes with a 3 year guarantee included from John Lewis so happy with that but hoping I won't ever have to use it.

Also included is 90 days tech support to get up and running. I have a feeling I'll get my money's worth there!

It should be arriving next week. Hubs is delighted that he'll get his back again full time!

Thanks again for all the help!  ;D

Yay!  New toy!  And you will finally be able to show us your Pass the Parcel item!  Woohoo!  (Sorry about your old computer, though.  Should we have a moment of silence to remember it?)

Very sorry to say that I can't dance and take pics at the same time.. or I would have been delighted to oblige, of course.  :)

The recent activity in the PTP thread has reminded me that I owe an update on this one.  :)
Pretty much as soon as I’d ordered the envy, I realised that I actually wanted the Mac instead. I had to do a pros/cons list in order to come to that conclusion but when I did it was pretty clear!

It’s taken a while because I ordered the US keyboard so I had to wait for it to arrive from Shanghai… twice as it turns out, the first one came with a scratch, would you believe it!

I'm really happy with my choice though. I keep discovering new things it can do which pretty much delights me every time! And I have even been to a Mac class, and loved it, haha! So big success!  ;D

Excellent!  Keep an IPad in the back of your mind for a birthday present.

Thank you Jim!  ;D.   I have to admit, I'm actually really tempted by the idea of an iPhone next!  :D
