haha oh jeez, how'd they react to that when they showed up?!

Are you truly an expat if you haven't had people think you're talking about your undies when you say "pants"??

I can just see it now, our really stuffy quality lady listening to a call of me telling somebody my "pants" are wet. Ermmm Erica that's not work place appropriate.

Oh gosh, I used to babysit in high school. The older sister would pick on little brother and ged lock himself in his room. His parents always were like it's fine he calms down then comes out.

Well one time he called 911 crying, the took the phone off the hook. I had several emergency responders show up and I was totally unaware.

911! LOL! I would have been so embarrassed. Fortunately, none of my babysitting jobs resulted in 911 calls. Lots of mishaps, though.

And lol about the "pants"...I feel like a 90 year old granny saying trousers, but I've learned the laughter isn't worth saying "pants."

LMAO I'm glad it's not just me that feels that way!! That and the word "dungarees". That is literally what my nana used to call her jeans but here that is the name for overalls. It's hard not to instinctively laugh when people my age talk about going out and getting some dungarees hahahah

Definitely more of a blessing, but I proclaim my innocence again, I was gone before Jar Jar. And they didn't ask the engineering department for script help, don't know why.
And credit where it's due, the username is a riff on Durhamlad.

I'm not allowed to say who this was, but imagine a young, fit girl coming to America to learn English.  She gets a job taking orders at the fast food counter.  Coming from a culture where they don't do fast food or coke , she was a bit hazy on the overall concept .  One day she asked me the name of the foam on top of a draft coke and I told her it was head.  I later heard that she was asking people who ordered fizzy drinks if they wanted head with that.

I might have mentioned this in the past on this forum, years ago as a student I volunteered at a venue for the fringe in Edinburgh.  No matter what your role you helped build the venue for a few days before the festival.  Everyone just wore old clothes--I wore my painting jeans the whole time, as did most other people.  After 3 or 4 days we were sitting around talking about how gross and tired we felt, and I said 'I've been wearing the same pants the whole time we've been here.'  The room stopped and stared at me.  Really though, these were people my age...they've seen enough American TV to know pants ;)

haha luckily my husband speaks "American" so he can pretty much figure out what I mean when I say stuff like this most of the time. It's funny because, obviously depending on the context, he's able to just tell what meaning of a word I'm using without me having to specify or ask if he knew which version of the word (like "pants") I meant.
