How do you open this?
« on: August 24, 2017, 11:13:00 AM »
I've been trying to get the globe off of this light fixture for over a year and I can't figure out how to open it.

The landlord sent someone out and he broke open the other light to put a new bulb in.

See pics. Any ideas?

There are pins but they don't screw in and I can't get them out. It looks like that is how the maintenance guy opened it though.

Just to confirm, you are sending us pictures of an open fixture and asking us how to open it?

If so, the third picture down seems to have a metal lip that pushes against the glass and holds it.  Maybe just pull a bit harder?

Also, I see a bolt with a corresponding hole but that would be too easy so I'm guessing that's not it.  Maybe the receiving threads are not normal and you just turn them a half turn to make them unlock, then another half turn to lock.

Also, have you tried gently rotating the whole glass bit , maybe a quarter turn or so?  Next to the bolt hole is an odd shaper hole that looks like it could catch and release a tab when rotated

Yes and no. The maintenance guy broke open the one I've shown open. It is hanging on by duct tape now.

I want to properly open the closed one without breaking it.

I need to get a step ladder so I can see it better. I'm too short to reach it and I don't have any chairs to stand on.

Are you sure he was the maintenance guy?  He seems to be unclear how the job works .

Well...

Each of these units are owned by individuals. So we don't have a building maintenance person. My landlord said he would send out the "electrician". After coming home one day and seeing it taped up, I concluded it probably wasn't an electrician that came out.

It may have been one of the drug addicts that hang out in front of the Spar for all I know. Or it could have actually been the landlord trying to save some money.  Lol

Still could've been an electrician.  They do wiring and sockets.  They might put in a light fixture, but that doesn't mean they know how all the non-electrical parts of them work.  You should've seen the mess the plumber made of our bathroom at our old house.  But the plumbing worked a treat!

Be sure to post the solution.  I'm sure one of my suggestions is right.

I feel like it has to be "push and twist".

Is the shade glass or plastic?  How may lights?  I'm trying to find one online to see if there are instructions.

If push and twist doesn't work, try squeezing side to side!

Looking at the close-up of that last image, I think there's a clue in that screw thing.  If you look closely, it is notched.  And if you look at the hole it apparently goes into, there's one side that is elongated and flattened.  So I think the key is to point all the notched sides of the screw/bolt/pin things in a specific direction so it can be released.

Ooh... ok. I'm going to get a step ladder tomorrow. I'll report back. I think that might be a good lead!

It's definitely being held up by tension and something else as everyone has said.

Those look like pains in the butt! Best of luck.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.
