Gardening question...
« on: December 05, 2004, 03:52:48 PM »
... with apologies to everyone i've already asked this question of!  ;)

I normally mow my lawn for the final time in late October... then dont mow it again till Spring.
This year, my neighbour and i have been taking turns mowing the lawn (our lawns are joined up, with no fence)... but it was his turn in late October, and he didnt do it!  I should have done it, but i kept thinking... its his turn, he will do it, but he never.

So now the grass is really long and looks ugly, but im afraid it's too late in the year to mow it.  I think i heard that you are not to mow it after the first frost of the winter.  It's not terribly cold up here in my bit of Bonnie Scotland just yet, but we have been getting a wee bit of  frost most nights.

Will i kill the lawn if i mow it and then there is a frost straight after?

Grass is actually tough to kill.

If you are really concerned, perhaps mow it on a high setting, enough to give it a trim without chopping it all the way down?

It'll be fine.  Set the mower blade a bit higher than usual and even if it gets brown, it'll come back in the spring.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…
