I'm in London and we weren't meant to get hit hard at all, but it was very windy and the sky was an ominous shade of orange from the Saharan sands brought with the storm. The way it blocked out the sun and changed the light reminded me of smoke from a forest fire.
I thought I'd take advantage of the winds yesterday since it was still quite warm and washed our (white) bed sheets. Luckily, they dried on the line in record time and I brought them in before the sands arrived. I'm not sure if it would have discoloured them at all, but I'm still calling myself lucky.
I was in Greece a few years ago when overnight winds brought sand from the Sahara, but, unlike yesterday, it deposited the sand and everything in Athens (cars, plants, play grounds) was covered in reddish-brown grime. It was disgusting and quite unsettling until you knew it was just sand. Since we didn't speak Greek, it took most of the day to learn what it was and our best guess was really bad pollution.
