That sounds lovely KFDancer.

I wasn't worrying about visa costs or anything as I had lived here for almost 8 years by that point. But a white dress just isn't me.   And I fell in love with my orange dress! A local lady did an amazing job with the flowers and butterflies and other shapes shapes.  Here's some photos.

We flew to Cyprus on the Monday, went to the Town Hall to have our documents registered on the Tuesday.

Wednesday we all had a late breakfast in the pub.  Got back to our villa and started to get ready.  Future Hubby went for a haircut.

Married at 4pm.
I wore grey and silver.
We got married in an old house which had been turned into a museum of how people used to live.

The mayor married us.  My gay friend gave me away.  My sister was the best man.

We had a lovely meal in a private room of a restaurant nearby.  While we were eating we got a phone call to say out photographs were ready and they dropped them off to us at the restaurant the same night.

Including myself and hubby there were 9 of us.

Spent a few days in Cyprus having barbecues and enjoying being all together.

Flew back to the UK and a few days later we attended my sister's 50th wedding anniversary - where we told everyone we were married. Mixed response. One of the family no longer speaks to me - her loss, everyone else surprised but happy.

Travelled round the Cotswolds for a few days as honeymoon.

This sounds awesome.

We had SIL & BIL as our witnesses and only guests. I thought it'd be a nice gesture since they'd be my only family in the UK around my age. I regret that decision now since she's crazy and turned our wedding day into a bit of a behind the scenes drama with the rest of the family, but whatevs.

I wore a peach lace wiggle dress from the 1950's for our ceremony. Planning on wearing it again!

We need a photo!  I have no idea what a 'wiggle dress' looks like!

I like that so many of us went nontraditional :)

I've been married 3 times.  I guess I've just never really taken marriage that seriously, and have always kind of viewed it as a contract, renewable every 5 years.  That's probably fairly non-traditional!

My current victim and I aren't married, but next year will be our 10th anniversary of being a couple, and we're kind of toying with the idea of having a party for that.

I've got a few theories on that:

- Visas are expensive, so there's not as much money to go toward a big wedding

- US/UK weddings might generally be smaller since not everyone can come, so they might be a bit more low-key (I know more US/UK couples who did registry office than US couples who went to the court house)

- After the stress of visa paperwork, a small, non-traditional wedding is appealing

- In US/UK couples, one partner is likely to be out of the country for most/all of the wedding planning period, putting extra stress on one person or extra complications trying to plan it remotely

- US/UK couples on a fiance visa only have 6 months in the UK to get married, so time is limited

- Paperwork is a real romance killer

I'm impressed by everyone who moved here on a fiance or spouse visa and still had a big white dress and traditional wedding. I was busy stressing about visas, getting my name on bills and giving notice. Plus, trying to navigate the supermarkets and other daily stuff you have to relearn when moving to a new country.

I did the semi fancy wedding. It was still relatively small because we did destination. But the stress of the visa (mine was a nightmare story) and wedding planing was to much. I shamefully went up three dress (yes it's a lot Its horrible) sizes from stress eating/not sleeping and general stress that I had to get a new fancy white dress.

I'd do it all differently if I had a choice. It wasn't the best way to spend my last months at home either. :(

FIL watches a lot of TV and too many made-for-TV Christmas movies for my taste. ::)

It seems like Christmas on TV goes on for three months now. November and December for actual Christmas (oh, how I miss Thanksgiving holding off Christmas for a while) and all of July for Christmas in July. ::)
