Apologies having rechecked the sender email address it was from Sheffield...not the contact centre. Make a difference? I’ve Not seen it on here before.

What was the email address that it came from? We can see if it's a known one or not.

Okay, so that's the correct email for Sheffield themselves, not the call centre, so that's good (it's usually the email address that the decision made email comes from) :).

It sounds like they needed to check into a couple of things, which is taking a bit longer than expected.

I can't remember if you said whether you sent documentation from her misdemeanour?

If not, they might be carrying out a criminal record/background check to get the info themselves, which can add a couple of weeks to your processing time while they wait for the information to come through.

No we didn’t have any documentation to send nor did we think it would be needed from 24 years ago but alas maybe we were wrong. So it could be that or as we’re applying under Appendix armed forces it could be that they’re checking despite documentation we did submit. And last but not least maybe they’re checking with the court who granted custody etc for the child?

I think out of the reasons you suggest here it's most likely to be the custody that they're checking on. They are incredibly strict with that.

Yeah, you should provide documentation from any and all convictions, regardless of when they happened. You'll need the documentation for future visas as well, so it would be good to get hold of it anyway if you can.

I've never heard of them doing extra checks for Armed Forces applications before. We've had several people apply under Appendix AF over the last few years and their applications haven't taken any longer than anyone else's.

So as Larrabee has commented it may well be the child custody order which they’re checking is legitimate.

It could be... though before I saw larrabee's reply, I was in the middle of writing a comment to say that I didn't think they would actually check into that, as it's your responsibility to provide the documents, not their responsibility to chase it up (i.e. if they aren't satisfied, I would have thought they would either contact you for more documents, or decide to refuse the visa).

But, I'm not sure either way as I don't know exactly how they deal with the custody documents... so it could either be the custody agreement, or it could be the misdemeanour.

I just wish I knew which it was. I could get in touch with my son's bio dad to get a signed doc if needed. Just figured that the custody order and him having signed the parenting plan would be good enough. Hey if it's a criminal back ground check I'm good. It's just that one mistake in my misspent youth. We will wait and see what happens.
