I requested December 22nd and that’s what they gave me.

Also I got my decision made email exactly 6 weeks after my app was delivered in NY / exactly 4 weeks after my application received email.

Great news!  I think you might be the first person ever to get the exact date you requested - I'm so pleased!  That's what they should have been doing all along.  :D

I got approved as well.

But now we're facing another logistical nightmare.

My FIL is terminally ill and took a turn for the worse overnight. My partner would ideally want me back in the country day after tomorrow (which is the soonest I could fly there), but my entry clearance isn't until the 5th of December.

I understand I can't fly unless I have a ticket out of the country before the visa date starts and then I would have to leave and return? (i.e. flying to Paris or Ireland)

Let me know if you guys have any other advice. We've been on the phone to consulates (who have not been helpful), checking prices, etc., etc.

Congrats on the approval but I am SO sorry to hear about your FIL. I don’t have any advice to give but I’m sure that there’s a way to make it work.

Entering early is a risk, but they *may* allow you in.  It will 100% be up to the immigration officer on the day.

If you do go early, do NOT fly to Ireland and back.  They are not able to stamp your visa vignette which is what you need (they’ll only stamp that between the validity dates).  France is fine.  Anywhere in the world other than the UK and Ireland is fine.

Hugs!

That's what I've been reading. I spoke to the consulate who couldn't offer me advice and a vignette transfer didn't seem possible (it seems you can only extend). So I'm flying out on Wednesday instead and hoping things stay stable over the weekend. I don't want to take the risk of getting denied entry.

Are your flights over night flights, you could have left here on the 4th and got there on the 5th or is it same day?

Congratulations on getting your visa :).

Unfortunately, I think waiting until Wednesday is the best option :(.

Vignette transfers can be done but only if your vignette expires before you can travel... and it would involve applying online again, mailing your passport back to New York and paying about £200 for it, plus it would take several weeks to get it, so that’s not going to help you.

You could attempt to enter as a visitor before the 5th, but it would be risky and there’s no guarantee you would be allowed in.

I think that’s the best decision you can make in this circumstance.  It’s so hard when the rules get in the way of times of need.  We all hope you can be there in time.

Thank you ladies. You have been so helpful and patient with us and our questions about getting my visa. You're worth your weight in gold! <3

Yes my flight is overnight, but we decided (my dad is going with me part of the way because we finagled a way to get a last minute deal cheaply, but it involves entering and re-entering the airport to get on a different airline!) to leave on the 5th because I've read that sometimes airlines will deny you boarding, even if you're allowed in the next day. I just figured the extra day gives me some padding to make sure there's no problem.

I think the worst part is feeling helpless. At least IF something happens, I'll be there for my partner for everything else that is going to occur afterward, so I am at least thankful I got my visa today.

Sometimes, this whole thing just seems really inhumane. I get bureaucracy, but life doesn't work on bureaucratic time lines.

Oh and sorry for not congratulating everyone else! I'm on about 4 hours of sleep with a lot of emotion and spending all morning on the phone and looking at flights. I've not gotten to be properly elated with you guys!
