Hanukkah menu?
« on: December 06, 2004, 06:38:29 PM »
For the first time in my life, I've decided to try to do a Hanukkah meal. I want to stay pretty traditional so that means latkes and brisket. Anyone have any idea if you can get brisket here? I think what I mean is that lots of cuts of meat are called different things here so I'm not sure what to ask for.

Any other ideas for things to include in the meal?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

We just had a rolled brisket pot roast last week.  I was able to buy one from the meat counter at our local Sainsburys.  I haven't often seen them on display in the meat isle of a supermarket, so I usually get them from the local butcher.

We have brisket every Sunday but its not the same as in the USA.
Besides the brisket, what about Matzo ball soup, chopped liver, gafilte fish :)
Dont have clue where to get this stuff. I have some matzo ball soup mixed stashed away in my cupboard but I brought it from the USA. I know in Golder's Green, London they have a lot of Jewish deli's. Maybe you can find some places online?
Best of luck and Happy Chanukah!

Waitrose/Ocado online has a Kosher food section that has most of those items.

Thanks Britwife! I just checked and they are out of stock on most the items. Obviously because of Chanukah. But now I know where to go for Passover shopping :)

Balmerhon:

You can get Brisket in the UK.  Although the cut is somewhat different than the US cut.  I would be more prone to get flank which based on the location on the steer is closer to the true American brisket.  I hope that makes sense.  I also, would add some sort of fat to the cooking process to get the true flavor that you may be looking for.  Or you could ask your butcher to leave the fat cap on when he/she cuts it for you.  This would provide more flavor.  I miss my American beef!  ;D Not to slam British beef but it tastes different and yep, I do know why.  Nothing gross or anything, just the difference in what the animal is fed.  Okay, thats better left for another thread.    Hope this helps!

I don't know if you're a baker, and it is more Purim-y, but rugelach is always a great dessert!

Happy Chanukah!  :D

Why yes it is!  It is supposed to be a dancing morel, but I can not make it dance?  I love morels as well.  Heck, I do not think I have ever eaten a mushroom I did not like  ;D

Have you tried truffles then?

Yes, white and black, Italian and Chinese and American from the Pacific northwest.  I wish I was better off to afford them though.  I do have some wonderful white truffle oil in my fridge but the DH doesn't like it.  I was very blessed with where I have worked and the Chefs I have worked for, they always turned me on to new foods especially if they wanted me to buy them.  Do you like truffles?  I read somewhere, I think in Dorset that you can find truffles there, just the black variety though.  There are chanterelles/girolles, porcinis/cepes, hen of the woods growing here in NI.  I went out foraging for them this past fall but to no avail.  I even found an extension service that plots where they are, but the scope does not pinpoint it enough for me.  I will find some in the woods somewhere.   ;D  Don't get me talking about fungi.

Oh yes....I love truffles.  I used to get the oil and then for my birthday a few years ago my husband took me to the Ritz in Atlanta.  It's one of the best places to eat.  They were featuring a French truffle menu.  Every course except for desert was just filled with lovely truffles.  We even got it with the wine pairing.  It was costly, but my God was it the most wonderful meal I ever had in my entire life.  Then one year I ordered some for my birthday as well.  I stuck them in with eggs and risotto to flavour them.  I then used them thinly shaved over scrambled eggs and lots of other things.

Last year because of the weather being so poor I only managed some frozen ones from Urbani truffles.  They did send along some butter to die for and truffle flour.

They are so expensive but I do try to get them once a year.  Even if it's one teeny tiny one.  The canned ones are just not the same.  Oh and if you love mushrooms I suggest Poland in the fall... so many wonderful ones and they are cheap cheap!

Does anybody have a good recipe they've tried before for a lower fat matzo ball soup? I know it won't taste as good without all the butter or chicken fat but my hips definitely don't need it. :P

I've emailed my mother, though honestly I think she uses a boxed mix.  Her solution for me when I was trying to cut down on fat and calories, HALF a matzo ball ;D :P
