After a crazy rush last week to get everything sanded and finished, we were able to deliver the desks to the care home tonight.  Our first paid gig is a success!  The feedback was positive, so that was gratifying.  Here are a few photos of the desks in place, with the same angle from the Sketchup model next to each shot:

And this is just a detail shot of the cable hole insert we made out of oak to blend perfectly with the rest of the desk:

Wow! Those are amazing!  Congratulations!  :D.   Must be a lovely nursing home to be interested in having such quality pieces.  :)

You are a quick healer too... excellent news!

I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

We did a super-sneaky thing to make it look like solid oak, but this is lighter-weight and reduces the possibility of warping over time with change in ambient conditions.  It's oak-veneered plywood sandwiched around some ribbing, with solid oak edge banding to make it look tidy.  Plywood is more stable, and this hollow construction method is much lighter weight.  I'm able to carry all but the largest panels on my own.  Well, I could before they were all assembled into desks.  The finished desks are quite heavy, even though they're mostly hollow.

Great job!  What do you listen to while doing all that work?

When it's not the sound of very loud tools (two weekends ago, we were both running routers for hours... my husband smartly wore ear defenders; I did not), we keep to mellow stuff.  Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, John Lennon/the Beatles, David Gray, Jack Johnson... um... other random things.  It's a chill kinda place.  :)

Sounds nice.  What about some political rants via podcast?  That's what I'd be listening to.

The workshop is apolitical.  It's our unwind place.  He would be sad if I brought politics into that space.  We completely agree on politics, except I like to rant about it, and he has given up and wants to shut it all out.  Since we can't do much about the state of the world, I'm more and more inclined to agree with him that the right approach is to vote when given an opportunity, and otherwise avoid the subject altogether.

It's excellent news that I am a quick healer...?  Should I be worried?  ;)

But thanks, larrabee!  I'm not sure about the quality of the nursing home.  My husband only went there for the first time last night to deliver the desks... we communicated with the people through my husband's friend.  I'm not 100% certain they knew what they were getting, even though we provided a very nice printed quote with the virtual models shown from various angles.  My husband showed me a picture of what we replaced, and it was... well... not great.  :P  I think they were surprised (in a good way) by what they got.

Really beautiful! You are a true craftsman

Thank you.  :)

hah!  Thanks?

It looks beautiful!

Thanks, Nan!

We like them, but it's hard to be objective when we've spent so much time with them.  It's really nice to get feedback from others.

Put it this way, when we redo our kitchen, I want a quote!  Not joking!

Hah!  You should really let us do our own kitchen first, so we can figure out what the heck we're doing.  :P  But, aww, shucks...  [smiley=blush.gif]

I’m okay with that.

I should suspect we won’t start for 4 years.  I really like to think you’ll have a kitchen by then!
