What I ate last weekend
« on: November 20, 2017, 11:29:42 AM »

Went to a fancy French restaurant and had my favourite French Meal: Raclette!

They put a giant piece of cheese inside a special heater and bring it to your table

They also give you a nice selection of meats, potatoes, and pickles

You wait until the outside of the cheese gets all bubbly, then you scrape the cooked cheese onto the meat and potatoes and eat it up while the cheese is cooking some more.  Repeat.

Once in France I managed to set the cheese on fire and actually had flames at the table.  I was desperately trying to catch the waiter's attention while he ignored the stupid American.

Raclette is delicious (but it's orginially Swiss, not French ;) ).

If you're ever at Borough Market, Kappacasein sells raclette and I've been told by several people that they have the best grilled cheese. I don't think it's the best, but it does get high praises.

Oh my gawd, I've only had raclette once, on a ski holiday in the Alps in 2003-ish, but I still remember how amazing it was.  I'd eat it again.

That was the same ski holiday where I asked the guy behind the bar to heat up some apple juice because I was so desperate for a cosy hot cider because I was cold from being in the snowy Alps, but that's apparently strictly an American thing.  The look he gave me... *headshake*  And then I went back and asked for another after I finished the first one!  I have to wonder if he tried it later.

All right, I'll accept that  it may be Swiss.  All those countries come together at the mountain tops anyway.

Cheese fondue is not far off and could easily be done at home

I would recommend a meat fondue with boiling oil but that's a bad plan with kids.

There's a pop up peanut butter fondue bar in London this weekend.

I love peanut butter, but peanut butter fondue just sounds disgusting to me. Especially as a full meal.

I'd eat that.  I wonder if you could make it at home.  Add something to thin it out a bit and some sugar and dip marshmallows in it.

As for the savoury stuff, I bet it would be like a Satay sauce.  Dip some chicken in....yum

I feel like a little peanut butter goes a long way.

I used to have a chocolate fountain in the US.  The amount of oil you have to add to the chocolate is disgusting!!

When my kids were here, we ate at The Kitchin in Leith. It's a Michelin Star restaurant.

The food and service was impeccable.

That's wierd, I've never added anything but chocolate to ours.  I buy a bag of Belgian chocolate for £10 on Amazon and heat it up in a water bath on the stove.  If there's a bunch of people, I'll add a giant galaxy bar.

What problem did added oil solve?

Are you talking about fondue or the chocolate fountain?
