I've always found that edibles go down well with the older generation.  :)

He likes photography.

We've done pretty alright for Christmas gifts for them.  I always follow "edible, potable, disposable" rules for gifts.

Last year we did a meal on a steam train.

The year before was a bird of prey photography experience.

This year is afternoon tea at a fancy hotel.

But just the FIL is tough.  He rarely drinks.  Is hard to please with food (to be fair my MIL is the best cook in the world).  Would rather die than go to a show.  <sigh>

Husband bought him a nice cheese platter from Harrods one year and that bombed.  Grrrr.

I leave it to my husband.  Last year he bought him a Nivea Men's gift set in the 50% off stuff after christmas.   ::)

But he's 70.  Needs to be recognised.

Do you know what kind of camera he has?  Perhaps you could get him something for that... I don't know what price range you're thinking, but a lens if you're feeling really generous, or maybe a filter (you'd need to know his specific lens, and what kind of photos he likes to shoot).

Did he enjoy the bird of prey photography experience?  Maybe another experience day like that.

Anything for the camera would not be in budget.  We don't go all out for birthdays.  I'd like to keep it to £50 max.

Yeah, he definitely enjoyed the bird of prey experience.  He likes gardens and such but they already hold several memberships to various gardens.

Does he shoot digital or film?  You could piggy-back off the bird-of-prey experience and gather some of his shots into a coffee table book.  Places like Snapfish and Photobox will do them pretty inexpensively, and he might really enjoy seeing his shots in print.

Sounds like your FIL is as impossible to buy for as my in-laws KFDancer.   It's impossible!!

(Who have luckily never called me by another name... But yeah, I hear you on the sadness and senility. My own Mom is becoming that way and it makes me sad and frightened).

jfkimberly, drum sanding kit sounds brilliant to me! Way better than cuticle gel!!
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

That is a fabulous idea! I made two books at different times for my Dad. He just loved them!  ;D

That's a great idea!  I'll pass it along to my husband.

How to get the images will be the hard part.  His mom is not tech savvy....  hmmmm..  eh, I'll hand over now that there's an idea on the table.   ;)

And I'd appreciate a drum sander WAY more than cuticle gel!  Though send me to the spa any day.    :D

I did have that concern in the back of my mind as I was typing the suggestion.  Um... good luck?  ;)

Hehe. I was just in CO so I'll let you figure out where my mind went regarding edibles...

Husband wouldn't let me bring any back with me either! Haha.

Hah!  I would NOT want to try to bring that through airport security.  I am trying to maintain my good character.

CO is the two-letter postal abbreviation for Colorado.  Recreational use is legal there (and in a few other states).  However, it's still illegal at the federal level, and, of course, here in the UK.  So going through airport security and immigration/customs at either end would be pretty scary when I'm planning to go for naturalization in the foreseeable future.  :)

haha. Yep. Edibles! I still haven't had any or smoked it... But I've never been one to smoke so edibles it would have to be!

Apparently there is a weed buying app here. I still don't understand how it works but it does. I would be too suspicious of anyone selling to buy any, plus I don't smoke anyway, but how do you know you aren't buying or selling to the police?
