Cheapest way to transfer funds
« on: December 07, 2004, 12:17:27 PM »
I'd like to maintain my bank account back in the US and am wondering how I can deposit money into it without paying the steep fees that most banks and other institutions seem to charge.

Pay Pal!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I don't see an option at Paypal for adding a non-US bank account.

You go to PayPal.com rather than .co.uk.  You need to have 2 different e-mail addresses.

In addition to the two different email addresses, you may well need a different physical address too.

Yeah, I use Mom's in the US for the US account and ours in the UK for the UK account.

So explain to me how you do this and what's the max amount?

You go to PayPal.com rather than .co.uk.  You need to have 2 different e-mail addresses.
I have a few questions about this....

My paypal account was originally a USA one - as Paypal only just got started over here this year.  I went on Paypal the other day interested in seeing if I could transfer money that way.  My UK address is a verified address - as is my Debit Visa that I first set it up with.  (both address and Debit Visa are UK).

Anyway - I had no trouble adding my USA bank account.  So (I haven't tried it yet - still waiting for the Direct Debit to be set up at Nationwide), I think that I don't need two email addresses.  I think you can fund your Paypal account with your Debit Visa and then just transfer it to your US bank account....Does that make sense?

Anyway - when I get it all set up - I will try it and let everyone know...this way would be much easier than trying to have two accounts with two emails....

I haven't looked at this closely as I have everything working ok with the two email addresses, but ...

How are you going to send money to yourself without another email address?

I guess what Jacky means is that she would take money from her DebitVisa and "fund" her PayPal account itself.  Then she would transfer the money from the PayPal account to the US account.

Interesting idea...I may have to try it...  ;)

Paypal does have a monthyl limit though. Not sure what it is, but last time I transferred money from our UK account to our US account I think it said something like 500 dollars a month max?

I don't think it could be that much.... I transfered the whole of my last student loan check from my US to my UK account to the tune of about £6,000 and there were no fees or anything.... The only thing was that they warned me that there wasn't a guarantee on such large amounts. Maybe the limit is on
UK->US but not vice versa?

There were no fees?  ??? They charge me every time I do it!
Maybe I'm doing it wrong, I don't know.
We are setting up a dual currency account with HSBC though (hopefull next week if we can get it sorted in time) which should eliminate a need to use paypal.

How odd! I've only been charged a couple of times - for transferring small amounts. Last time a friend sent me £20 and they charged me 25p or something. But for the big amounts I've never been charged. Could it have something to do with how you "code" the transaction - don't you have to state if it's for goods purchased, etc.? Hmmm. I can't remember exactly how it's worded....
