I see your mould and raise you a bird.

Er.  Ignore that topic.  It didn't come out right.   ;)

But my windows and doors were all shut and locked.  I got up to use the toilet and came back to a bird in my bedroom.

If a freakin' bird can get in, it's no wonder I get mice.  Where the heck did it come in from?!  A previous owner took out the chimney and closed that up (curse her!), so it didn't come in through the fireplace.  And everything that could be shut was shut.  I'm at a loss.

But some day, we will get this house sealed, and there will be no more rain seeping in and no more wildlife seeking refuge (and/or food).

Has the bird made its way outside now?

Heehee!

I was going to say the chimney, could that have come unsealed?

What kind of bird?  ;D

Yes, the poor thing.  I tiptoed as gracefully as I could over to the window and opened it as wide as it would go, then I found a spot to sit and watch, as far removed from the bird's exit as I could comfortably get.  It took three or four approaches, but it finally found its way out.

There is nothing between the tiled-over roof and where the flue would enter the hearth area (if we had one).  The loft floor is covered over... all internal traces of the chimney/flue system have been removed.  I'm pretty sure that was not his way in.

Hmm... but that reminds me... a sound startled me last night and something that had no business falling fell from the mantle.  I picked it up and replaced it, and all was quiet in the house after that.  Maybe it was the bird, though... maybe he was in the house all night (I still don't know how he would've got in!).

I don't know birds, but I recorded some video of him hopping around my untidy bedroom... I will switch to my laptop  (affectionately referred to as my "big phone" because I use my mobile and my laptop pretty much the same way) so I can upload an image or gif or video.

I'm waiting for imgur to decide it's uploaded.  It let me upload mp4, so I assume video is fine...?  It's a very short clip.  About 2 seconds.  I took a bit from the bird just on the floor, then hopping/toddling under my bed.  I'll check the longer clips of him in the window to see if there are better shots of him.

Hrmph.  All that time waiting, and the image is tiny.  I'll definitely look for a better clip.

Aww, little birdie in the bedroom. I think it's good luck  ;) I can understand in the summer with the windows wide open, but the winter, hmmm  ???

Such a cute little bird! :D  It's difficult to tell in silhouette but he almost looks the right size and shape to be a wren.

About that giant hole...Maybe you could walk around with a candle and see if the flame flickers to find a draft and track down the hole.

The flame would flicker constantly.  The house is terribly drafty.  Honestly, I sometimes think when we remove the old cracked render, the house will just fall down.  Maybe that's the only thing (barely) holding the whole thing up.

I just Googled wrens, and it does look to be about the right size, shape and colour.  He (she?) was cute, that's what I know.  Even if he did poop on Disco Squid.

Adorable little birdy!

I wonder what my cat's reaction would have been.  I don't think he would have cared.  Copper would have wanted that birdy in her belly!

That is so funny! Birds can sneak in... They used to live in department stores in my old city. Elly definitely would have gone into hunter mode. But she's been surprisingly lazy since coming back here, she's been sleeping on my suitcase next to the radiator most days. She'll be sad when I finish unpacking.
