Sufficient Money for Stay in US?
« on: March 09, 2018, 02:06:56 PM »
Having received valuable advice before Christmas which resulted in a great Christmas holiday.

Our next holiday is upon us, this time we will be holidaying in the US.

I will be going through the airport alone, where i will have the usual documents:

- Valid Esta
- Itinerary
- Screenshot of Credit Card Balance
- Return Ticket

I have a very good job and the visit is only for 10 nights.

Was just wondering for 10 nights what would be sufficient cash?

Many Thanks,

I would think $100/day if accommodation is paid for or staying with someone.

Thanks,

My plan was to carry like $500 - $700 cash, as i tend to use my credit card for everything (Planning to do some serious shopping).

Am i better just for "safety" getting a $1,000 out or would a screen shot of my credit card limit be sufficient?

The credit card limit should be sufficient.  :)

Thanks KFdancer, as you can probably tell i get very paranoid about this.

I worry so much, that i try prepare as much as possible.

Is a screenshot from online banking sufficient or should i do a statement?. The reason i ask is my statement will state a balance of about £700 against a £8,000 limit. Whereas the screenshot will show nothing against the limit as i paid it all off.

Eeeeeek, i am sad i worry too much

I go to the US for about 2-3 weeks every year or two to visit family. I usually don’t take more than about $300 in cash and then I have my debit/credit card for anything else (plus I have a US bank account although it only has about $30 in it at the moment). I’ve only been asked how much money I have available on one trip (September 2017) and I’d completely forgotten to bring any bank statements. I just said I had a credit card and that seemed to be enough for the immigration officer (he didn’t even ask for the card limit).

Perfect, sounds like either one would be sufficient.

I always over react about these things, but saying your'e on holiday to see a GF/BF or partner can lead to that increased scrutiny which is why i worry.

I would also add that your budget would vary, depending on where in the US you were going.  Some areas are WAY cheaper than others....

Have a good trip!

Yeah, was just thinking that. If you are going to say, San Francisco or New York, then you would be spending more.

Thanks for the responses.

My worry isn't soo much how much i am going to spend.

It was more i plan to bring like $700 cash and use my credit card for the most things. Was just wanting to make sure that they accept a screenshot of my credit card limit as proof of funds otherwise i would just get more dollars out (i just don't like carrying loads of cash, and my credit card gives me a better exchange rate):D

To be safe, I would probably take your actual statement with the £700 bill on it as well, just in case they don't think the screenshot is good enough evidence.

Since you have an £8,000 limit, a £700 bill won't be an issue, because the remaining £7,300 is more than enough to cover a 10-day trip anyway. And if you have the screenshot which shows it's already been paid, all the better.

Chances are you won't be asked to show any of it anyway, but it's best to be prepared :).

One other option: do you have much money in your current account? If you have some money in there too, you could also take a bank statements as well, to show how much is actually available in your bank account (rather than being available as credit).

Again thanks for all the responses.

I will take both :D

As to my current account, i tend to wipe it down into my savings the moment i get paid and drip feed it as and when i need it.

Though i could take the bank statement of my savings account which has a healthy balance.

Thanks again all :D

I do the same thing - transfer a load into my savings when I get paid. However, I would take your latest savings account statement too :).

That way you're covering all bases:
- if they don't think the cash is enough, you can show the credit card limit
- if they want something more substantial than credit, you can show your savings account statement
