Renewing Child's US Passport Questions
« on: March 20, 2018, 02:02:47 PM »
Hello All,

I did not realise that I had to renew my children's US passports.

To be honest I travelled last year back to the US and they travelled in and out with their UK passports and all was fine.

No mention of US passports.

After reading online I see we have to go to London.  Which is very inconvenient.
Can I apply when I go to the US, perhaps?  We are flying back over in August of this year.

Thanks in advance

I don't think you have to go to London. You should be able do it in Edinburgh or Belfast instead

Despite not having trouble last time, it's actually illegal for a US citizen to enter the US on a foreign passport. You could have had problems with US immigration for not having their US passports.

I would definitely renew their US passports now/soon in the UK, before you fly to the US in August.

From the US Embassy website:

Can I hold more than one passport or nationality?

Yes. Naturalization in a foreign country, employment with a foreign government, and/or voting in a foreign election does not automatically jeopardize U.S. citizenship. However, please note that all U.S. citizens, even dual nationals, must enter and depart the United States on U.S. passports.

I read on the US Embassy website and it says under 16 apply in person.

Am I reading it incorrectly?

No, you are correct, under 16's need to apply in person with BOTH parents present.

You don't have to go to London though.  If Edinburgh or Belfast is more convenient, you can go there.

No, you're not - I just meant that you can go in person to either London, Edinburgh or Belfast.

Don't underestimate how serious the rule is that US citizens must not enter the US on a different passport.
