Question about Cash Savings for Unmarried Partner Visa
« on: March 22, 2018, 12:57:28 AM »
Just joined this forum after seeing a number of helpful posts on here. I am currently living in the US and hoping to apply for an Unmarried Partner Visa in the next few months. My partner (who has dual British-US citizenship) and I have been living together for over two years now, and are planning to move to the UK together once I have a visa. For the financial requirement, we are going under the cash savings route, and we came across a question that someone on this forum may be able to help with.

When using multiple bank accounts to meet the cash savings requirement of £62,500, do they find the combined balance of all accounts added together on each day and take the minimum over the 6 months, or do they just find the minimum balance of each account over the 6 month period and add them all together, even if the lowest values occurred on different days?

For example:
10/1/2017: account A = $85000, account B = $4000
11/1/2017: account A = $89000, account B = $2000
Would the total "lowest value" for that period be $85,000 + $4000 = $89,000, or is it $85,000 + $2000 = $87,000?

Unfortunately we are finding ourselves scrambling to add up multiple accounts, as the pound has gone up drastically in the past 6 months. Would really appreciate any help. Thank you!

Hi nycGirl.  :)

They will take the lowest balance of each account during the 6 month period. In your example $85k plus $2k.

Remember that they calculate the exchange rate based on the closing spot rate on Onada.com on the date you submit your online application so if it's close, you're going to want to time the application such that the rate works in your favour.

And as you're unmarried partners, you are going to have to be particularly careful with your relationship evidence. Feel free to post a list of everything you are planning to include and we can check it over for you.

Hi larrabee, thanks for the clarification. This is unfortunate since I recently moved most of my money from one account to the other. So my balance for one account has dipped pretty low, even though my total savings is actually much higher than 6 months ago.

Also thanks for the heads up on the exchange rate and supporting documents. We were planning on putting together a list of documents for this forum once we have compiled everything. It looks like we won't be able to apply as soon as we'd hoped, unless the pound goes down in the next month..

We were in the same situation when we applied the first time. Unmarried partners and using cash savings.

We got a refusal because:
1. Our cash savings did not sit in the bank account for at least 6 months. We were short 2 weeks from the date we submitted the online application. We wrongly assumed that we were ok since the bank statement's final balance said we were over the minimum.
2. We didn't provide enough proof of living together in the same address for 2+ years even if we've lived together since November 2014. So you must provide documentary evidence of living together for EVERY SINGLE MONTH within that 24 month period. Evidence such as joint utility bills, joint lease/mortgage, other mail for you & your partner mailed to the same address, etc.

Just curious, do you plan to get married in the future? Would you consider getting married just to legalize and make your visa application easier?

I'm happy to see your write this.  I have been so worried that I "pushed" you two to get married.  ;D

Not at all. We’ve been engaged since June 2016 tbh so this whole visa thing just pushed the wedding along haha! Both sides of the family are very happy we finally did it. Plus it gives everybody peace of mind for the visa. My husband’s parents actually told us to do it before we applied last November so now we get the “I told you so’s”
