quick question about which voucher for paying taxes
« on: March 26, 2018, 11:25:33 AM »
I have completed my 1040 and realize I owe money (<$500) (due to passive income) to the IRS, however, I will not have completed all the other forms, ie my 5471 in time for the April17th deadline. However, I will file by June 15th. Which payment voucher should I include with my check payment that I plan to mail today. I know I can send the check in June with my return but want to avoid interest charges.  A  1040V or a 1040ES voucher. I assume a 2017 1040ES or is there something specific for overseas filers that I am unaware of.

Extension payments are normally made with Form 4868. There is a special procedure for s965 tax that needs to be paid by 17 April 2018 if you going to make the 8 year election.

This is the form my son used this year to file for an extension to October 15th and it came with a voucher and an address to mail a check to if he needed to pay. (he is in fact due a refund but needs an extension to meet the 330 days needed for FEIE)

Does the company for which you are filing a 5471 have any accumumulated undistributed earnings?

yes we have some  retained earnings, and I now realize that I cannot use the foreign tax credit to pay the "transition" tax due on these.
