Southern style barbeque at Old Spitalfield's Market
« on: December 10, 2004, 08:16:18 AM »
I've only been here for 3 months now. Last weekend I made my first visit to Old Spitalfield's Market and was intrigued to find a restaurant named Arkansas Cafe. I spoke with briefly with the proprietor and he is Arkansan and had an accent and a big smoker to prove it. So I was just wondering if anyone here has dined at the Arkansas Cafe? I would have had lunch there but had just feasted on Brick Lane. I spied on the plates of others, and the food looked good. The owner told me he recommends booking a table during the week.

Hey Doug - heard it's decent though, of course, not quite like the States.  And yes, it does get packed.

You should check out the meetings board and come on to one to meet a gang of local Americans in London some day!

How's life treating you here?

I've heard about that place ... maybe the next UK Yankee outing can be there!

I'm game!

There used to be a pub a few miles from here (Hampshire) that was called Houston's Pub. The guy was originally from  Houston, looked just like Kenny Rogers.......and had one hell of a smokehouse!

He had all the proper bbq- chicken, ribs, brisket, along with pinto beans, coleslaw......and tater salad. Needless to say, I ate the entire meal in happy tears!

I mourned its loss when he moved :(

I went to that Arkansas place about 3 years ago... it was fine, but nothing special.

Thanks, I hadn't paged down the front page that far and so never realized there was a meeting page. I will look for the next london gathering.

Life is ... okay. Been here 3 months.  Can't say I love England but I do love that this 2-3 year employment opportunity has brought us (the lovely wife and me) closer to the rest of the world. I am really looking forward to hopefully getting at least one of our dogs over here next April (we're waiting for the pet passport so we can avoid quarantine) and to doing a lot more travelling. We're headed back to the states next week and I don't think I've ever so looked forward to a trip.
