Walking shoes (loafers)?recommendations?
« on: May 16, 2018, 04:06:52 AM »
I recently discovered that the Health app on your iPhone tracks your steps. So I went from 1-2k steps in the US to 11-12k steps since I moved! We live in city centre so it’s more convenient to walk, rather than take the bus to make 2 stops. My feet are really killing me and my entire body is aching.

I saw a lot of women wearing leather loafers and they looked rather comfy. Penny loafers or the ones with tassels. Can anyone recommend a good brand that won’t kill my feet while trying to break them in?

The two most famously comfortable brands that spring to mind are Ecco and Schuh.  :)

Thanks larrabee! Will take a look at those.

I lived in my Adidas Superstars in the States but even they proved to be uncomfortable with the amount of walking I do now.

I usually just wear Nike running shoes which are really comfortable for walking in too!  :)

Same here - I walk about 3-4 miles a day and I wear either Nike Running or Nike Walking shoes (usually ones I've purchased in the US while on holiday, because they're a lot cheaper there than in the UK :P).

Wish i knew these things before moving haha! In-laws are visiting on July so maybe I can ask them to order a pair for me. But in the meantime I need something. Preferably not too expensive

I usually wear Hush Puppies or Clarks.  I tend to wear more ballet flat type shoes verus loafers.  But I want to change it up this year so am going to check out some of these suggestions!

Check that you have the right arch support in shoes too. Any massive change in activity can wreak havoc if your foot is turning in/out on each step. Sorry I'm not much help there as I still have my prescription insoles from the states.

I really like new balance sneakers for walking, they have a roll bar that provides a lot of stability. But those were also purchased in the US and haven't gone looking for them here. Ecco are amazing but ££. I actually plan on visiting the orthopedic shoe shop when I'm back in the US because they don't really have anything comparable I've found here - very cute shoes made with great support and space for insoles.

I guess I have to go into an actual shoe store to try on the shoes for fit. I haven’t done that in ages since online shopping. I remember the days when my mom made me walk around the store with both shoes on and asking if they were comfortable.

I'm still wearing the $10 loafers I got at Walmart before we moved over. But, if memory serves, a few years ago I had a nice pair of shoes from Clarks and was very happy with them.

I think someone else suggested getting insoles?

If you do that make sure you have the insoles with you to try on in the shoes.

I had to wear athletic shoes to work for awhile because I doubled my walking and half of it was wearing heels and I gave myself metatarsalgia. Footpain is not fun. I had to walk to get to work after public transportation since I wasn't driving.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I went to that Schuh store that larrabee had suggested because there was one I could walk to. Tried mostly sneakers, trainers, and some ballet flats. In the end I went for some Dr Martens Mary Jane sneakers because they were comfy and fit my style. I’m a “heavy on the heels” walker and this pair had extra heel cushioning and on the balls of the feet. So I’m happy!
