Am I one of the few that actually had an easy experience?

I didn't have a difficult time either. It was all a pretty simple process even if I felt an interview was unnecessary. I could have filled out the application myself.

Were you both job-seeking?  That was the thing standing in my way... they didn't see the point in me having a NINO if I wasn't job-seeking.

Yes but it is easy enough to just say you are job seeking.  They required no proof.

I’m sorry you had a horrible experience but they are right that you don’t need a NINo if you don’t intend on working. I have no immediate plans of finding a job until my son turns 3 next March but I told the guy I had job applications lined up and was expecting to hear back soon. The entire process was also pretty seamless for me.

My husband can't work but I told them that he wanted to open an ISA and also that he had been told by HRMC to get one for the purpose of filing tax returns.
They were happy with that. They send the form and I mailed it back.

Your lady was being a jobsworth I think!  :)

Apart from the 50+ mile drive our son’s appointment was easy. He told the chap that he was looking for a job and since our son is in his 30s there was no other question as to why he needed a NINO. Before he went to the interview he was clearly told what to bring including a letter from us stating he was staying at our house plus one of our utility bills to prove we lived there. After asking about us ever claiming child benefits for him the guy did a search to confirm that he didn’t already have a NINO and that was it. He also provided a letter that our son could show to a prospective employer until his NINO arrived in the post.

Except I did need a NINO to start my Blue Badge application.  :/

They definitely should have accepted that as a reason. If I had had that reaction, I would have been inclined to drop the word 'discrimination' into the conversation, that sometimes helps people to see the light.

I thought so, too.  But that's when I finally said the "what magic words...?" line.  Because "blue badge application" clearly weren't the magic words.

Ah. Sorry I missed that part.

No worries.  The woman on the phone didn't miss that part, but she still refused me.  Then I phoned back and lied about a job offer.   ::)

Interesting. I rang them up, and did it all over the phone. They sent me the form to fill out, I sent it back in and about a week or so later I got my number in the mail. No going for an interview or anything.

Did you get your current visa from inside or outside the UK?

It seems as if those who applied from outside the UK dont have to attend an interview.
