Soy Sauce
« on: June 03, 2018, 04:23:20 PM »
I am not a fan of UK soy sauce. I can live with it, but......
I used to use La Choy, which from what I have read in the past is not as good as the others (although I don't know why, too much salt maybe?). But.....Amazon used to sell La Choy according to the internet, is there any soy sauce out there that tastes similar? I prefer the dark soy sauce over the light version of what I can get here in the UK.

I get Kikkoman at Tesco.  It's what I used back home, too.

I've never noticed a difference in the taste of soya sauces, other than the obvious difference between dark and light.

The Aldi stuff is quite a bit cheaper and works for me.  :)

I am currently using Aldi dark....about as good as anything I've found. La Choy and I think Chun King I used before in the US and through the US base shopping. Kikkoman doesn't do it for me, and I've tried a couple other brands.....not even close .Maybe I'll try adding some extra salt to what I've got to see if that will help.

Ahh, googling, it looks soy sauce like La Choy has corn syrup as ingredient. So it's probably not the salt you're missing, it's probably the sweetness.

Have you tried Lee Kum?

I too am a Kikkoman fan. I also enjoy getting this "sweet soy sauce" from Sainsburys sushi counter.

Ahhhh.....good call. I just checked the ingredients of Chun King, it's got corn syrup as well. As I sit here consuming lemon sherbets by the ton......no wonder I like the sweetness?? Yes.....I'll definitely check out a bottle of the sweet versions. Makes a huge difference to me if it tastes like La Choy. Many many thanks.

If you like sweeter ones, try the one from Sainsbury's that's near the sushi counter. It's specifically marked as sweet soy sauce :) It's delicious (but isn't cheap)

But.....now the question....when I look at the ingredients of Aldi dark, it has sugar. Is there a taste difference with "sugar" compared to corn syrup?

Taste difference AND mouthfeel.

Soda in the US is usually made with corn syrup instead of sugar nowadays and you can tell the difference between the two.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I HATE USA Coca-cola.  UK Coke for the win!

Since the sugar tax, they're  almost all artificially sweetened now.  I'm paying "top dollar" for Coke because they didn't alter their recipe to get under the tax.  Everything else falls under the "diet" label, as far as I'm concerned!
