What food did you pack to bring to the UK?
« on: June 15, 2018, 11:29:38 PM »
I think I'm going to have one suitcase that's going to be all food. I'm stocking up on guacamole mix, lipton onion soup mix, vanilla pudding (to make banana pudding), Tate's ginger cookies, salmon jerky (so sad that I can't bring over beef jerky, I order it online for the hubs but it's not my favorite brand) are the things I can think of right now.

Not a food item but I'm addicted to my lip balm, DCT, so I think I have 2 year's worth and a year's worth still in England. I'll be buying that every time I come back for a visit.

I asked my in-laws to bring over some Goldfish blasted cheddar crackers when they visit this coming July. For me. Not for my baby. Haha

What your baby doesn't know, won't hurt. You know how good Goldfish are!

Have you had the parmesan ones? Those are my favorite!

Basically, if it's not a meat or dairy product and you will likely miss it - I would bring it. Crackers and chips do get banged up in transit. I have a bunch of allergies/sensitivities so I stocked up on Simply Organic and trader joe's seasoning mixes, and Daiya dairy free cheese, glutino crackers, and some trader joe's candies.

There are a few who swear by their velveeta ;) And dill pickles are not really a thing here! If you like Mexican food you may also want to bring dried chilies as there isn't as much of a southwest variety here (lots of Indian and Thai chilies).

I spent a lot of time in the last year in the UK but now that I'm going indefinitely, just trying to load up.

I love Trader Joe's! It's probably where I grocery shop the most when in the states.

I learned that Mexican food is not very good in the UK when we stopped in a Mexican restaurant and were given popcorn instead of tortilla chips and my carne asada was coated in pepper. Luckily, I can make that it at home. I love Mexican food! Sucks that their bag of tortilla chips are so small. Definitely not the grande size we're used to, lol.

I am a fan of velveeta but not enough to bring it from the states, LOL.

Flavor blasted cheddar was my go to roadtrip snack in the US. With Smartfood white cheddar popcorn.

I miss them.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Mexican seasoning/spices for sure. Velveeta if you can't live without it, and any other dried mix that you really like (ranch dressing mix, for example). If you are using a container, throw in some canned goods like salsa verde or canned tomatillos.

I missed salsa verde, but finally found a source for tomatillo seeds, so trying to grow some to make my own. I have extra plants I will give to anyone located anywhere near me. They will need transplanting pretty soon though! PM if you want any all (about 12 that are still small that I can't bear to destroy, but have no large pots or room for planting on).

I brought a few bottles of Mountain Dew, purchased in the airport, inside security.  Everything about my move was as impulsive as then-UKBA would allow one to be, and I didn't consider the possibility that I wouldn't be going 'home' regularly for visits and resupply missions.

I can't really remember, but I don't think I packed any food.
However, on the odd occasion I do go over to see my family, I always bring back Hidden Valley Ranch and Neosporin.  I have a friend who is on a beer trip in California just now, and he's bringing both items back for me.

HV Ranch is now available through Amazon, but it's expensive... like £10 for a box of 4 ranch packets.

It may seem strange, but the longer you're away, the less you miss. Stuff doesn't taste as good anymore, or you've found ways to make your own stuff , that tastes even better.   I was in the US last week and the only stuff that made it back it with me was stuff that was made local to the area I was in.  Maple syrup, maple candies, BBQ rub seasoning, a jam called sundae in a jar, and bacon jerky.  I couldn't believe how expensive food was in the US when I was there. Sticker shock.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

This.  All day long.  At this point I just bring some medications and clothes.  Even then, I prefer a lot of UK clothes to US clothes.

But I get basic trousers and jeans in the USA.

My things I bring are usually:
NyQuil
Large quantity bottles of:
Advil
Tylenol
Benadryl (all Costco own brand)
Giant Taco Seasoning from Costco
Deodorant (it’s different here)
And then some children medications that are more effective than British counterparts

Food wise, usually just queso and ranch dressing.

I bring Tylenol, DayQuil, Pepto Bismol- it' sold here but only behind the counter, I believe. I bring vitamins too, as I find they're cheaper in the US. Also Unisom.... I VERY rarely need it, but I'm grateful to have it around if I can't sleep/have too much on my mind.

Agree with the others that you can find a lot of substitutions or make your own. I love cinnamon sweets, like Big Red gum and cinnamon disks, so I bring those back. Twizzlers, seasonal/holiday candies that are hard to come by in UK (like the Reese's pumpkins in fall). Boxed mac and cheese. Can you see a pattern with the kind of food I bring back? ;D I so wish that I could bring back a big carton of International Delights iced coffee as well.

Bras. I'm a bit of a Bath and Body Works junkie too, so I usually end up bringing back some shower gel, cream, hand soap, maybe a 3 wick candle.
