Crazy plan to never pay tax, or is it?
« on: June 17, 2018, 01:31:40 AM »
Is this feasible?  I am a US/UK dual national.  I have never resided or earned money in the UK, so I have no tax connection there.  So the plan would be, as a retired person, pay all taxes owed on my retirement accounts.  Put the money in a regular US bank account.  Move all the money to a Cayman Islands account.  Renounce US citizenship.  Cayman Islands has no income, cap gains, or inheritance taxes and Britain bases taxes on residency and I am not a resident.  Travel the world on my British passport.  Never become a tax resident of any country, ride around on my yacht all day.  Seems too good to be true.  Could it work?

Notes:  I wish I had money for a yacht, one can dream.  I have no desire to renounce US citizenship.  This is purely a hypothetical exercise.

I would think it is not possible to be non resident and not domiciled in ANY country, but of course I may be wrong. Perhaps you could establish residency first in somewhere like the Caymans. I read recently that the UK government is removing tax shelter status from their “overseas territories “ such as the Cayman Islands, as places such as these are popular spots where wealthy folks will move to in order to avoid paying UK income tax.

Another thought, if you are going to pay all your taxes on your US retirement accounts why not simply roll all that money into a Roth which is then forever tax free.

After tax (non retirement) money can be all put into an equities only dividends ETF. Unless you have huge amounts of dividends then that will all be tax free or nearly tax free as well.
