US credit score
« on: June 19, 2018, 12:10:51 AM »
Hi everyone!
I was wondering if your USA credit score will have any impact on your UK credit?

For example if I let my credit score tank in the USA due to lack of payment will this impact me in the UK? Obviously going back to the USA it would have tremendous impact as getting credit would be hard/ pricey.

Nope - your US credit score won't impact (positively or negatively) your UK credit score.

New arrivals in the UK will have to build up their UK credit score from scratch.

And in the States your credit dings will roll off your score after 6 to 8 years (bankruptcies stay on there for 10). So if you're going to be gone a long time and then go back, it might not be an issue.  Check also for the statute of limitiations for collecting debts in your state of origin.
(Student loans will never leave you, so if you ever expect to collect social security, pay on them. The govmt. will attach your SS payments for the debt, when the time comes. And any IRS refunds. If you're a US citizen, you get to pay US taxes no matter where you are.)

It won't impact your UK credit score, currently.

But it could impact if you can apply for citizenship under the "good character" requirement which gets tighter and tighter all the time.  Currently a bankruptcy will affect how long you have to wait until you can apply.

You would start with no credit in the UK, but it can have other implications especially if you have to return home or have a tax return coming to you. Don't default on student loans if you can avoid it. It's taking time but I'm still paying off all my medical debt there as well. I don't want bad relationships with doctors who kept me alive and well!

In our situation we have a vehicle that we can’t pay off, tried to sell and can’t, and the bank basically said to bad. So we will drive it to the bank Friday and rent a car to get to the airport. I have a 840 credit score in the USA and I plan to continue paying all other debts (credit cards only) but I’m not paying for the vehicle.

Would a dealer buy it? Or is it worth less than the loan?

I'm sure you'll be OK-ish if you don't return for a long time, as that's private debt. I'd just be worried about a judgement against you as it would take time for that to go through and would be there for 7 years.

Worth less than the loan. And yeah I’m sorta worried but at the same time I don’t think there is much I can do other than deal with it. We don’t have anyone here to sell it for us when we are gone so it’s a take care of it by Friday situation.

Why not just sell it to Carmax then you would only owe the difference? It only takes a couple of hours to sell a car to them and you will get a reasonable price although obviously not top dollar.

Just be really careful when you decide what you are going to do, you don't want to end up regretting your decision.
What if things don't work out in the UK and you end up back in the US for some reason? If things go well and you end up wanting to apply for citizenship in the UK, you could find that you are impacted in that case too. As KFD mentioned, the rules are tightening constantly and it could be that by the time you were ready to apply that would prohibit you from doing so for however many years.
Currently you have to declare parking tickets for goodness sake!

Most institutions would rather take instalments than receive no money at all, maybe they will work with you if you explain the situation further?

Curious how does the UK check for any bankruptcies or debts abroad? Do you have to disclose your SSN identity when you apply for UK citizenship? Since US debt can only be traced to you with your SSN, right?

Judgements and bankruptcies are a matter or court record. They can easily be found on any city/county or state court house website that supplies public records.

I see. Never dealt with any so wasn’t aware. A friend advised me to check my credit report and order a background check on myself once a year to make sure i wasn’t a victim of identity theft. I guess some people involved in scams have a way of knowing when somebody is outside of the country for a long time. How do you get judgements while you’re outside of the country though? Don’t they need to serve you?

Not necessarily. It depends on the jurisdiction.

And remember, some people may have judgements or bankruptcies before they leave the country. Judgement liens and bankruptcies don't fall off the judicial public record like they do with a credit report. They are two different things.
