Coolies!  Lots to do, then. I'll have Friday evening, all day Saturday, and about half of Sunday to wander about in.

About Durham - Do you have a sense of how long and/or strenuous the walk from the railway station to the University might be?

According to Google Maps it is 1.6 miles and 26 minutes to walk from the station to the university. Durham City is very hilly so how strenuous depends on how well you cope with hills. The bus service is very good. Whenever we drive to Durham we park at a “park and ride” and use the bus to get in.

The Cathedral is only 0.6 miles from the station.

Ah, ok. There's probably a bus from the station to the university, then. I'll let her know.  Thanks!

PS Can you recommend a nice place for me to eat supper at on Friday if we're staying near the train station? Daughter will be having supper with the conference, so I'll be bouncing around on my own. Prefer low-key, but good food. Any variety. If there was a really good Chinese place, that'd be ideal. (I haven't had good Chinese food since we got here.)

I’m afraid I have no idea about places to eat. Whenever we visit we only ever have lunch or afternoon tea and just pick some spot we like the look of but I can’t remember any names or locations.

In Newcastle last October we wandered through an indoor market not far from the castle and picked an Italian place to eat lunch at.

Thanks. I'll be back in Newcastle, since that's where the hotel is. But I'll ask at the desk if needed. Or order in. Something kind of fun about sitting in a hotel room watching HBO (or the equivalent) and eating a pizza with the stuff ~I~ like on it, to feel "wealthy".  ;) ;D
