I'm curious if anyone else has been told something similar - so my husband and I were discussing applying for my national insurance number, and I mentioned that some people on our lovely forum here received paper applications by mail and some were told to go to a JobCentre Plus. He just rang the number to apply for the national insurance number as he was curious what they would tell him. He explained that his wife (me) has recently arrived in the UK on visa and is seeking employment. They told him to tell me it's not done by telephone anymore and they no longer send out applications, that it's done online now. So according to her, I apply online and get an appointment for the nearest JobCentre Plus. But of course, I go to the apply for a national insurance number section of the gov.uk website, and first line, clear as day: you need to apply by phone.
I'm speculating that they told my husband this just to get rid of him since it wasn't me calling to apply, but I am curious if anyone has been told something similar? I'll be ringing them myself anyways and will let you all know what they tell me, but I couldn't help but wonder if maybe it is moving from telephone to online now.
UPDATE: rang them up and it all went swimmingly - no mention of applying online
