Thanks, larrabee!  We have been too far from speedy internets every place we've lived (both together and before we met) for so long that we thought slow internet was just our lot in life.  Learning that we could get FTTP was a revelation.  We are so stupidly happy now.  :)

I have no idea what any of that means, but if you're happy, I'm happy!

Excessive cat pictures will slow that right down.  And egg roll pictures are especially bad for plugging up those intertubes.

I have no idea what any of that means, but if you're happy, I'm happy!

Before yesterday, we were getting 4.8Mbps download and 0.6Mbps upload speed on the best of days.  Most of the time, we could barely stream shows on Amazon and Netflix (and there was lots of buffering interrupting us on bad days).  But now we have Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP), and get 300Mbps down and 50Mbps up.  Our download speed is 60 times faster, and our upload speed is 80 times faster.

Excessive cat pictures will slow that right down.  And egg roll pictures are especially bad for plugging up those intertubes.

Oh dear... what will this picture do, then?!

Yes!  And that face is what we've been doing since we learned FTTP was an option for us.  We went from the worst service that could be classed as "broadband" to the best consumer-level available.  And since it's fibre all the way to our house, we should be future-proof for quite a few technology advances.  Yay!

That's so awesome!  :D

I'm kind of in the opposite situation. I have ok internet, but not brilliant so when I got the new computer and my broadband contract finished shortly after, I thought I'd push the boat out and get fibre.  When I checked the availability, literally every property in a huge radius around me can get it except mine and one other further down the street. I thought that must be a mistake so got in touch with openreach but apparently not! My wiring connects directly with the exchange rather than going via a street cabinet so I can't have it and seeing as 99.9% of every one else can, I don't exactly see them going out of their way to accommodate me any time soon! Bah!  :-X

But can't they run fibre from the nearest street cabinet or from the exchange to you, even if you're currently copper direct to the exchange?  Or would they make you pay out of pocket for it?  Our deal might have been part of the Welsh outreach to get more rural customers up to speed... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-42861041  Maybe that's why they were willing to string new fibre right to our loft.

I don't know, they didn't even mention that as an option, the response was more like "don't hold your breath"! Maybe I'll go back through the enquiry form and ask. Thanks for the suggestion!  :)

Also, I don't know how long ago you last looked, but my husband and I would look on OpenReach every few months because we've been desperate for years.  This was the first time our address showed as "taking orders".  We then tried to order it online through BT, but we hit a message saying our order could not be placed and to call BT.  So, rather reluctantly (I hate phones, but I was motivated), I did.  And the cheerful Scottish woman at the other end let me order the fastest ultrafast service BT offers.  Best phone call ever!   Well, second-best... the phone call when I realized my husband was the one is still the best ever.

The whole time I was on the phone with the cheerful Scottish woman, my husband was all, "What?  But how?  I don't believe it..."  And right up until yesterday morning when I saw the engineer calling for backup to get another van that has the hoist on it, we were both dubious that they sold me what I meant to be buying.  But then the hoist van arrived, they brought in the fibre from down the street, installed the box, and my speed test has been happy-making ever since.

This is excellent, now you have a new "go to happy thought" for times such as when Tesco is messing you around!  ;D
