Oh my!  How long were you trapped out there?
About an hour. Could've been much worse!

Congratulations Young Lady Jimbocz!

If there is a cash bonus, I will fall all over myself for that because, let's face it, $CASH$ is indeed a motivating force.

I found out quite early on that my own kids work for cash so I created a program called, "Pass for Cash".

I have three kids and they have a scale for their academic level. Currently, I only have a high school student (Senior, finally!) and she has a "progress report" every three weeks and a "six week report".

Her "progress report" rewards $3.00 an "A"; $1.75 a "B"; $0.75 a "C".
Her "six week report" rewards $6.00 an "A"; $3.00 a "B"; $1.50 a "C".
She earns nothing on a "D" grade and if she fails any class, she loses it all!

If there's an Advanced Placement class, that specific class gets a 50% increase and if the kid "sweeps" all classes with an "A", kid earns a 50% bonus on all so that AP class "A" grade at "six weeks" could end up being as high as $13.50

Kids here have six classes a year.

Trust me, my kids hustle for those grades. I never have to tell them to do their work and they do come to me to ask for early morning rides for tutorials or study groups. It works for my kids anyways.

Goodness, that's very comprehensive.  That sounds like our family rules after the little lawyers have argued and negotiated over every little thing.

The final rule we came up with is £75 for every 7 or 8 GCSE and £50 if she does this horrific extra french exam next year.  The downside is she has to keep going to French school on SaTURDAY

That overwhelming moment of relief when a couple of security guys break themselves into your hotel room because your numpty husband has locked you both out on your 6th floor balcony.

I want to genuine;y pretend that this didn't make me nearly choke on my drink and giggle....but I'm sorry, it did! Glad you both got back inside! Did you at least have a good laugh about it with the security guys?

£75 for each 7 or 8... but what about a 9?  Is it really going to be £200?

Haha no worries! We found it quite hilarious (maybe not so much at the time...) to be honest.

The security guards were probably like "oh these pinche gringos" (we are in Mexico) but they got a good tip out of it at any rate.  We were about a second away from starting to shout at people walking by down below!  Luckily that was avoided and we are not the talk of the resort as a result.

My LMH today was - restoring access to my devices. I hadn't turned on my macbook in quite a while (it has to be used at a desk) and I was praying I hadn't reset a password on there in a while. I got back into my email account, reset the password, and voila - all my device backups restored. I wish I had thought of that last week when I was panicked!

Backstory if you hadn't seen it: I had a brain fog day, managed to lock myself out of both my tablet and phone, do a factory reset on both because i entered the wrong pin too many times, and forgot 2 email passwords and the 2-factor authentication kept me from being able to get back in without google's help. Still waiting on account, but it wasn't the one with my backups! I now have lastpass enabled on *all* my devices. It won't help if I forget the pin again, but that's written down somewhere safe along with the master password for lastpass. AND lastpass allows you to let someone else access your "vault" so hopefully even if I end up sh*ts creek again, my husband can save me.

And I finished the first coursera class in the specialisation I started. Now onto fun excel formulas and learning the "solver" plugin!

Yeah, I had to increase my mobile buffer so I could make the international phone call. Dave came out with the room service book just before, so we only had the internal reception and room service numbers.

Luckily I had my phone, so I googled the external number and called them.  I'm like..  ok, my Spanish is so rusty.  How do I tell them I'm locked on my balcony??  Pretty much the first thing out of my mouth was "¿Hablas inglés?" She was really good: "Ok, we'll send security out!"

Half an hour later, nobody had turned up so I phone again.  "They haven't been up yet??" she said. Me: "No. ¡Rapidamente por favor, mi esposo tinene colito!" Which turns out is not the word for colitis, but desperation makes you do funny things...

We spent about 10 minutes shouting to the security guards when we saw them open the door.  They had to pry the latch open with some pliers and finally they were able to get in.

Now we figure it will just be a funny story to tell!

It could've been much worse!

Luckily, colito isn't a word in Spanish.  It is the word for colitis in Italian, and I was getting myself confused between the two.

My mother told me a story once about doing a study abroad program in Mexico when she was younger.  She told her homestay family, "Estoy caliente," thinking it means "I'm hot" (literally, it does) and then was promptly told it means, colloquially, more like "I'm in heat."  Then she followed up with "Estoy embarazada" which she thought was "I'm embarrassed."  Nope!  "I'm pregnant."

Well, that was quick.

Hah!  Your mother's experience sounds like the kinds of things I would say to embarrass myself... in English (my first language)!  I had a summer job right after highschool at which my boss told the whole team, "The only time Kimberly opens her mouth is to switch feet."  *sigh*

Surely they don't taste that nice!

Well, I successfully did it to myself yesterday...  Had a complete mind blank and forgot the Spanish word for egg - and successfully ordered myself one scrambled grape for breakfast.

*facepalm*

Thankfully she knew what I was trying to say and I am happy to report I did not end up with a scrambled grape, although the poor lady was probably like "what the actual f***?"  I've found you generally get treated a lot better here for even attempting to speak Spanish and the employees are often quite surprised because most other people don't bother.

That's ok - better drinks for me.

It's a simple equation, really:

Speak Spanish = more/better tequila = more speaking Spanish... And so it goes.
