Thankfully she knew what I was trying to say and I am happy to report I did not end up with a scrambled grape, although the poor lady was probably like "what the actual f***?"  I've found you generally get treated a lot better here for even attempting to speak Spanish and the employees are often quite surprised because most other people don't bother.

That's ok - better drinks for me.

It's a simple equation, really:

Speak Spanish = more/better tequila = more speaking Spanish... And so it goes.

I'm slightly bummed as I do wish I could've seen a picture of a scrambled grape just to satisfy my curiosity...

Reminded me of this scene:

9/1/2013 - "fiancée" (marriage) visa issued
4/6/2013 - married (certificate issued same-day)
5/6/2013 - FLR(M)#1 in person -- approved!
8/1/2016 - FLR(M)#2 by post -- approved!
8/5/2018 - ILR in person -- approved!
22/11/2018 - Citizenship (online, with NDRS+JCAP) -- approved!
14/12/2018 - I became a British citizen.  :)

Yes!  I get so annoyed that my husband makes ZERO attempt to try other languages.  Everyday I go over hello, thank you, please, and goodbye.  Yet he just remains mute.

He WILL at least ask “senna glutine?”, so I guess that’s something....

I'm curious now, too.  Maybe next time I should say, "No... Really, uva."

And I will be super impressed if she goes, "*squish* Scramble like grape!"

It's always a good idea to at least know the important basics.  Yes, no, please, thank you, where is the bathroom, etc...  Without gluten is a very important one for your family, no doubt!

Admittedly, I do freeze up with languages other than Spanish - am definitely more comfortable with Spanish having grown up in Texas.  And honestly, the most important thing to know how to say in Mexico is "Poco más tequila, por favor."

But, I try.  Dave has an Italian grandmother / family so I am trying to learn Italian for when we visit, but I get so muddled up between the two languages sometimes.

They can be sooo similar with just very minor differences that it's easy to get them confused sometimes I think.

I speak Spanish (well, used to.  Haven’t used it in 8 years).  And Italian is quite similar which has helped tremendously when I’ve travelled to Italy.  At least I can easily figure out what I’m ordering from the menu.

And we are currently in the Med area of Switzerland and it’s mostly Italian.  So been okay!

I'd have thought you did!

Having at least basic knowledge of Spanish has definitely helped with Italian.  It's easy enough, when reading, to pick things out like you said.  Speaking is a whole 'nother story and I find that's what causes me the most difficulty.

Two moments of happiness .. my passport renewal came back in under two weeks despite the embassy’s page quoting three ( roll on holiday in a few weeks) and I’ve been so swamped at work lately I must have lost weight and not even noticed put on a shirt today that was to small and somehow it fits.

HOLA HECTOR! (I wish I had people to come and fold my towels into dinos! :( )

Conversely, I learned Italian throughout elementary school and had great grandparents that spoke Italian (not that this helped ME at all because I didn't have to speak it with them or my grandparents) so I knew very basic Italian which helped me figure out menu items when I went to Spain! haha

Woooohoo to both! My passport took the exact amount of time they quoted and I was panicking it would never come back! LOL I'm glad yours finished earlier than predicted! :) Knew you wouldn't have an issues! :D
