Confused about us and uk taxes
« on: July 19, 2018, 02:15:21 AM »
So my spouse visa just got accepted so I’ll be moving to the uk.

Just wondering how do taxes work when you’re living and working overseas. I’m not the smartest when it comes to taxes, usually my mom helped me but she doesn’t know when it comes to this situation.

Assuming you are a US person, US tax is identical to living in the States. A US person is taxed by the United States on worldwide income and gains, can claim credit for non-US tax and may be required to file informational returns, such as an FBAR.

So you can use one of the US online tax services (H&R Block, etc.) to file them, or you can download the usual forms and mail them. You have until June 15 to file, but if you owe tax you should still pay by the "usual" tax deadline in April.

If you end up paying tax in the UK, there are ways to have that tax "count" to reduce your USA tax, often.

Hypothetical question.....

If you move to the UK with no intention of moving BACK to the US and you are working for a UK business, what if you... just don't pay the US taxes? I can understand the concern if you plan on going back to the US but I was just wondering. They obviously can't garnish your wages if you are working for a UK business. I'm assuming they can do something to your SS?

Again, just curious. :)

If I was in that situation I would worry about being branded a criminal and through FATCA and US/UK cooperation  have the banks close my accounts etc. I would prefer to give up my US citizenship then at least I could go back and visit if needed. (US passport holders owing more than $50k in back taxes and penalties are detained if they attempt to enter the US I think).

And they are going to stop renewing passports if you haven't filed.  That's the story anyways.

Honestly, if you don't have loads of US assets and your life is in the UK, the US filing is no big deal.

You'd not see a good portion of your SS, I assume, until after whatever you owe in tax and penalties was met.  https://www.irs.gov/individuals/social-security-benefits-eligible-for-the-federal-payment-levy-program
