When will I get the National Insurance Number??

I was here about 6 weeks before mine came. I still was able to work before I got it, your employer can just use your visa information and update stuff as you get it. Cool thing, you can make £1000 before you have to pay taxes on your income so that was nice lol.

Get your visa, get here, pick up your BRP, get post addressed to you in the UK, then apply for it.
9/1/2013 - "fiancée" (marriage) visa issued
4/6/2013 - married (certificate issued same-day)
5/6/2013 - FLR(M)#1 in person -- approved!
8/1/2016 - FLR(M)#2 by post -- approved!
8/5/2018 - ILR in person -- approved!
22/11/2018 - Citizenship (online, with NDRS+JCAP) -- approved!
14/12/2018 - I became a British citizen.  :)

I completely understand. Been there. I've just reapplied for my daughter's visa so now my wait begins for that...thrill.

the dishes thing....it's a Brit thing. And it's not not rinsing plates off after eating  and laying them in the sink...it's washing them and sticking them on a rack to dry without rinsing them off. *gag* we have a dishwasher now, but there's still some stuff that you gotta wash by hand. I nagged about this so much.

Please!!! You have to know, ...it's not all of us!   I'm not much of a homemaker but I DO RINSE THE DISHES!!!    [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

I am laughing and smiling! Missing white queso!!! Missing 10 salsa choices! You have great tips there on all fronts!!x
While I'm one of the fortunate ones that never had to experience waiting, what you are feeling is completely normal.   :)

Things to help pass the time:
drink margaritas!
look up the public transport in the area you are moving to and start to learn the routes and timetables
eat queso!
Start taking practice theory tests for your UK drivers license
drink margaritas!
Look at what you'll need to do to get your National Insurance number once you move over
eat queso!
Translate your resume into a CV format
drink margaritas!
Look at your flip flops and mourn the loss of their use (this summer being an exception)
eat queso!
Look at the NHS website for reviews on doctors surgeries and decide which one you want to register at
drink margaritas!
Refill any current medications for a few months in case there is a delay getting into a GP.  And see if said medications are available in the UK.
eat queso!
Wander through Target/Walmart/any grocery store
drink margaritas!

I'm sure I can come up with more....

The infamous dishes topic!!!

I rinse.  DH rinses.  The in-laws rinse.

We, too, are baffled by these non-rinse people.  Weirdos.  ;)

(now, shall we discuss eggs?)   ;D

When I first came over, I was a bit freaked out that the eggs are kept at room temperature.  I was so used to them being kept chilled in the US and thought they absolutely had to be kept cold to keep them from making you poorly.

Conversely, DH is a bit confused as to why we refrigerate eggs in the US and is amused there are shelves in American refrigerators that are dedicated to holding them.

Yeah... I had to teach my husband how to rinse the dishes. I'm like,  "I don't want soap on my dishes. The soap reactivates when I put liquid in the cups!"

It has taken awhile for him to unlearn that behaviour and I'm not sure he is 100% compliant!

Yes, same! I don't know anyone who has permanently moved out of the country. It's a way different mindset than extended travel or studying.

It's sad to leave but it's good you've found a job you love so much! Now you have an idea of what to look for when you move :)

Yep, four whole years of long distance! My brother complains when his girlfriend goes away for the weekend without him and I'm like yep, welcome to my whole existence. Try doing that every day!

I wish I could say the same about my family... they're trying to be understanding, but are a little too self centered to accept it, I think. My husband would've moved here if I *really* wanted him to, maybe, but I'm like you - I was always going to be the one to move because I'm just more independent and I think the UK is a more pragmatic choice.

Speaking of which, I'm curious: to everyone on this thread, why did you and your partner choose the UK over the US?  :)
My husband has never been to the US. He's way too Scottish. I don't think he would enjoy the US at all.

Oh my goodness! I am so happy to see you guys talking about the dishes here!! I thought maybe I had been taught wrong all my life that the dishes should be rinsed. LOL! So there is a clear cultural difference here then, eh? That's the only "fight" my husband and I have. The damn dishes!! I often go behind him and end up rinsing them later on. I can't do this soap streaks and bubble spots on my "clean" dishes thing when I'm eating!  [smiley=laugh4.gif]
