Moving abroad in the media...
« on: August 09, 2018, 08:37:47 PM »
Just putting this here since I don't know where else to put it.

This is just kind of a peeve of mine and I wanted to know if any of you Expats have the same feelings.

So. Many. Feelingss!!!

Ok so my problem is this: In TV shows/movies/etc. There is always a random British person living in America, or a random American is like "Welp, I'm packing up and moving to England!"

For example: I was just watching Switched at Birth, and there is a scene where Regina's boss says "I'm selling the business and moving to England!"

Or, in Girl on the Train this random British woman was living in America but they never explain how or why.

Ok girl I got a few questions for you. First of all who is sponsoring your visa?
Second of all, you can't just say it and then leave the day afterward.
Third, isn't selling a business, like, hard?
Fourth of all DID YOU DO YOUR VISA APPLICATION?
Fifth, what kind of visa? Where are you going? Who u marrying? If you own a business in America I know you didn't apply to no job in the UK.

I demand answers!!!

I am well aware that this is make believe...but it drives me crazy and now that I'm experiencing this process, my mind is flooded with questions when a random Brit appears in America or vice versa on TV. I can't un-know how difficult it actually is. Additionally, I think it adds to the ignorance of people who know nothing about this process. People who think it's just -easy peasy- to move to another country.

Yeah, completely agree, it's super annoying!

I just think of it as artistic license though, that helps!  ;D

Everyone I know who's done the process has this feeling. Haha.

My big two are the Holiday and Under the Tuscan Sun.

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Right? It was annoying. I loved the movie until I did the process.

This is a big pet peeve of mine - not just in TV and movies, but in books as well :(. There's the 'just went for a holiday and I decided to stay' one, or the 'I need a change, I'm going to move to X country one', or the 'hey, I own a company in London, do you want a job?' one.

It's so frustrating because it leads to this idea that you can just pick up and move wherever you like because you want to... which then leads to people just flying to a country and then being turned away by immigration.

For example: I was just watching Switched at Birth, and there is a scene where Regina's boss says "I'm selling the business and moving to England!"

I haven't actually watched Switched at Birth, but randomly, in season 2 the British coffee server guy called Jace who got deported was played by a family friend of ours (he grew up around the corner from us and was good friends with my brother when they were kids) :P.

If you like romantic films, you'll love it more than hate it.  It's not normally a genre I watch, but I came across it right after I moved over here and watched it one afternoon while my husband was at work.  THANK GOODNESS I HAD MY VISA ALREADY!

Sounds good! I enjoy romantic movies, I watch them when the husband is playing computer games. :)

Really?? That's awesome! Yeah, I remember I watched it, forgot about the show, and then recently picked it up again. Season 2 rolled around and I was like "OHH The British guy is coming into the show soon!!"

*Swoon* LOL
