Birth control
« on: December 13, 2004, 03:43:27 PM »
I had an IUd put in the end of July and have nothing but troubles since. I am slated to have it removed in early Jan, but was wondering if anyone else had any problems. I have had VERY heavy bleeding, cramps that last two weeks. Along with s*x that is so painful it just doesn't happen.

My next question is has anyone been on the depo provera shot?

I don't have any experience with an IUD but everything I have ever read about it talks of exactly the side effects you mention so I think it muct be pretty common

I should add that I chose the IUD as I am awful in remembering to take pills. I was thinking the shot as I would only have to show up every three months and it is free on our health plan as it is given by a nurse and not a doctor so we have no co-pay. Pill would be $25 on month on our health plan.

I've been on the depo shot since January 2001 without any real side effects.  I think it's a great idea for long term birth control.

And the shots are covered by NHS in the UK.

I got them in the US at my local Planned Parenthood.

I tried Depo a few times after having my second son. As far as reliability it was great. Effective, yes! But I got so fat from it I never wanted to "do it" in the first place. I couldnt wait to get off it. Now my friend has been on it for over ten years and she never gained an ounce from it. I guess it depends on the person.

I also gained a ton of weight on the pill and was really hormonal so I stopped it. Hello Brett!

I tried the diaphragm for awhile...."poof!" Hello, baby Jack!

Im using contraceptive film now. I got it in the USA. No side effects and if used properly its very effective. (fingers crossed)

If I get pregnant again Im joining a convent!

I havent seen it here but I read about it and wanted to try it so I picked it up at Walmart when I went back to the USA in Oct.
They come it little individually packs like condoms. It looks like a square piece of cling film. Its about 2in by 2in square. You just fold it up and stuff it in. lol (hope no guys are reading this!) After 15 min it disolves and youre safe.
When I was preg with Jack I belonged to a pregnancy forum. A lot of posters were in the USA and loved it so I thought I would try it. Mind you I hate to say "try" when referring to birth control :)
If youre interested you may try to order it online. Try Rite Aid. I think they may ship overseas.

I use birth control called the Nuva-Ring,  it is great, easy to remember and I have had no weight gain or other side effects.

I'm planning on getting a Mirena coil fitted, it's like an IUD but actually blocks sperm from entering the uterus so no spontaneous abortions.  I've heard good and bad things about it, but no bc is perfect-the Pill makes me lose my sex drive and I'd like to stay away from hormonal bc anyway, so I'll give this a go.

I can't use any of the hormonal stuff like the Pill, Nuva-ring etc, it makes me ill.  However (I know I might get slack for this, but I am tring to conceive now)  I must recommend this book as it's also for Natural Birth Control as well.

Of course nothing is 100% as Pebbles can tell you :P

i'm going to stay on my Pill (dianette) as long as i can.  my skin has never looked better!  any idea how long they let women take the Pill here?  i know in the US they discouraged it after 35, but don't know about the UK.

My next question is has anyone been on the depo provera shot?

I have been taking depo provera for 4 or 5 years with no side effects.   I was already fat when i started taking it, so i cant say whether it's made me gain weight or not.  I just love, LOVE, LOVE the fact that i dont get periods anymore... i haven't had one for almost 3 years, and that to me, is worth any side effect or weight gain!

You don't get it at all!?  Wow!!!!  Is that for everyone that is on it?  I have a few friends who did it in the 90's and loved it!!!  They never mentioned not getting their periods!  Cool!!!!
