Traveling to the states via Dublin
« on: August 12, 2018, 07:39:57 PM »
Has anybody done this route, so that you hit immigration in Dublin? My husband has a little black mark against his name due to an overstay back when he was 16/17?.

He’s got the legal visitor visa from the embassy to go to the states etc but he ALWAYS gets hassled. We’re going back at the end of September and we have already been in June this year. I was just wondering if anybody has gone this way and what their experience is.

I am thinking even if he does get hassled in Dublin it’s at the start of the trip when we’re not tired and crabby. I am also worried it may raise a flag that we were just there in June (just the two of us) and now we’re traveling back again with our child. It’s for a wedding and I can show the invite etc.

Let me know :)

I've done it a few times. Was really easy peasy and straight forward.   The immigration officers actually understand that US Citizens live in other places besides the USA.  ;)
I've never gotten food on my underpants!
Work permit (2007) to British Citizen (2014)
You're stuck with me!

I've gone through Dublin a few times, when visiting over here. The guys on the "to the USA" side always said "welcome home".... which was a nice touch, as I was usually pretty frazzled and tired by that point.

Can I ask what airline you used? Really thinking of doing this for our next trip, even if it costs more

I live in Belfast so I always go through Dublin. I've never had any issues, the most I've ever been asked is how I'm getting up into Northern Ireland and all I had to say was that I was taking the bus.

Aer Lingus. They tend to be the cheapest flights to the USA West Coast from Scotland.

Have gone Aer Lingus many times with the immigration done in Republic of Ireland. It's always been easy for me/my husband but not sure if they will flag up anything about the overstay so just have the invite handy just in case :) AND if they try to split you up in the passport line, don't listen to them lol They told us we weren't "really family" even though we were married and we got split up the first time we made the trip....then when I had to go through the immigration bit, they asked why my husband and I didn't go through together as we should have..... have gone through together since without issue :)
My, how time flies....
