I love that this post has had 139 replies in a few days and is still on topic!  It’s a UKY first!

I think Carol O. Connor still may derail.

He was also in Heat of the Night with Lawrence Fishburn.

I remember going to Canada with my parents once and ordering a hamburger and "hockey puck" was the only way I could describe it as well! It was AWFUL!

I'm just wondering how any respectable chef or cook could serve that to someone... I wanted to take it back to the chef and ask him if it was something he would eat. Sheesh!

I used to own a plumbing company and Mr Fishburne was one of our regular customers.  ;)

I love visiting Cumbria. There's a pizzeria in windermere that does really good gluten free food that my friend took me to, and of course I don't know the name. But I would say as a whole, the food isn't the best part of life up there ;)

I'm still missing US supermarkets. I'm having a pity party today because a toothache means I can't eat much and couldn't go shopping from dizziness, and I'm not doing well trusting my husband to get the things I want and need.

I'm sorry you're not feeling well. Toothaches are no fun at all. But you just got to let your hubby help you out this time. Let's hope he does a good job. And hopefully he's comforting you as well.

Yeah... food is definitely not the strong point of Cumbria... Thank goodness the beautiful lakes and fells help to distract me from my cravings. I love going to Windermere so next time we go, I'll have to seek out that pizzeria.

I actually don't mind the supermarkets in the UK but I do miss Whole Foods. I pretty much did 90% of my food shopping at Whole Foods and the other 10% was a Trader Joe's. I tend to like M&S in the UK but I've been given quite a bit of crap for that because apparently it's "posh"?? Like it's a nice market and it's convenient and it gives me lots of meal ideas... why is it posh?

I wouldn't call M&S posh. It's better quality and more expensive than the likes of Asda or Tesco but they're all over the place and all kinds of people shop there so it's not like they are exclusive or anything.  :)

British person checking in about fried bread.  It's just a normal part of a full English, and presumably Scottish.  And it's wonderful, particularly when fried in butter and/or bacon fat, served with brown sauce.  Yum!

Thank you! I didn't think it was posh either! But I think a lot of people in my town shop at the Aldi. I don't like Aldi... It's not that there's anything wrong with the food there. I just like a nice peaceful environment when I do my food shopping. Aldi is always a madhouse. For me coming from crazy expensive Los Angeles, shopping at M&S is a breath of fresh air. It's definitely less expensive than my Whole Foods in LA. But everything is relative.

And I also realize that living in LA is living in this big bubble of unreality. I never knew how out of touch I was with the rest of the US until I left LA. Don't get me wrong, I do love LA and I am a total LA girl but LA is one of the only places where you see a 1100 sq. foot, 2 bedroom house listed for $540,000 and think that's normal.

OH wants me to make a big pan of hash browns tomorrow.  I guess I should just buy standard Maris Piper?  Do I need to par-boil them, or would you just shred and cook from raw?

Maris Piper will be fine.

I had a great burger in Glasgow not too long ago. It was made with marrow so it kept it from drying out.

I've always just shredded mine and cooked from raw. The pieces are so small and thin that they cook up relatively quickly and easily. I'd use the same potatoes that you use for chips.  :)

Thanks for the recipe, Tami... I looked at so many online, I was starting to get confused.  Can't believe that guy tried 6 different methods to find the perfect way... i'm going with his option number 5!

Waitrose is posh! Hahaha.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I have not been in a Waitrose yet... But I have heard people refer to it as posh as well.  Looks like the nearest locations to us are in Gretna Green, 30 miles away or in Hexham which is 54 miles away... So yeah, probably won't be shopping there.

What makes it "posh"?

It's expensive. That's about it.

They only have a few things I buy there. Burrata cheese, Monterey Jack cheese, sheep's milk yogurt and a bigger jar of the sea salt flakes I buy.
