You're far braver than I...I won't even pretend to want to try Haggis! hahaha ;) :p Will DEFINITELY try your corn casserole though! :)

Please tell me that actually happened!

Believe we've got one planned for the "Americans in the reading and wokingham areas of the UK - meetup" and I'm sure other local American expat groups on facebook will do the same too :)

Yup, we have our local one.  The group in Bristol gets like 200 people at their Thanksgiving meetup.

Kerinay - haha  I love that place. I also love how many Seattlites there are on here! Where abouts do you live over there? I seriously look forward to meeting some of you when we come over.

About the Brits not trying foods - Well I'm going to force-feed some of them my grandmothers Corn Casserole that I make every Thanksgiving. It's just about the only thing I make that comes out right haha   And if any of them turn their noses up at it I'll say "I've come over here and eaten haggis twice and your horrible pickled onions. You're going to open your mouth and eat this corn casserole! (It has 2 sticks of butter and a table spoon of sugar and is to die for. Maybe quite literally. haha A good ole' Southern recipe).
Go on then, recipe please!  Corn with butter and sugar sounds like it hits all the food groups at once.

or "selective memories" (as in, he's selectively remembering that YOU did it but conveniently forgetting he was right there next to you).

My husband enjoys a lot of American food and, for that, I'm thankful...but I certainly don't want to push it! hahaha the second I serve him anything with marshmallows on it I know sh*t will go down! lol

I don't like sweet potatoes, so my husband doesn't know about sweet potato casserole, but I strongly suspect he would love it.  Marshmalows and all.  I feel a little guilty about that.  I feel like I could be doing my part to convince the British that traditional American food is good.  And also, I could be introducing my husband to a food I think he'd love.

Mrs. Magpie where are u moving to/from? I recommend bringing pancake mix with you and syrup you like. I bring it back every year but I’m good with the maple syrup from Costco.  But after 5 years year I’ve actually grown to like the beans on the pattie type hash brown! and I only tasted them for the first time recently because at first I was like no way!

This right here is the killer; the girlfriend time! Especially when there’s a chick flick to go see or shopping for that special outfit etc! Makes me cry if I think on it too long!

Also, I'll miss my girlfriends calling me early in the morning to meet for spontaneous breakfast/coffee (yes, the same morning without three weeks planning) but that's for another post topic, I think...  [smiley=laugh4.gif]

Yeah it does get irritating that nobody can just do spontaneous plans that last for only an hour. it's like you have to plan weeks in advance and have a long hangout session OR nothing at all. There's no in-between.

Wow! That's a lot of folks. I feel like there are far more Americans in the South. I only know of two others in Penrith. But I am also assuming that the North is less densely populated in general. I've not seen anyone else on the forum mention they were from Cumbria.

I am coming from Los Angeles via Miami and heading to Penrith, Cumbria. I found some nice real maple syrup at M&S. It's Canadian and expensive as heck but worth the money. I generally make my pancakes from scratch so I'm not too concerned about having the mix. Though sometimes it is convenient to have that Bisquick pancake mix in the little jug where you just add water and shake it up. I don't mind those little triangular hash brows at all. I just put a load of Frank's Red Hot on them! I still can't do beans for brekkie though.

YES!!! All of this!! I miss my friends desperately already and I'm not even moved over there yet. But when I was there for extended periods, it was just so tough to not have a girlfriend to call up and say "meet me for coffee" on the same morning an hour later. This whole planning hanging out weeks in advance kills me. Why can't we just hang out today?! In LA, everybody just floats, as I like to say. Like no one has a 9 to 5, everyone just works odd hours and so we just kind of do what we want when we want. So I guess I'm just spoiled.  :(

Teehee, when we were in the USA in June, we were picking up some local foodstuffs to bring back to the UK for us, for my inlaws for watching the guinea pigs and my neighbour for watching the chickens.  Hubby saw some local maple syrup that we had earlier in the week (first time he had ever been brave enough to try) and he was like "Oh we should get this, this is amazing".  And I was dying laughing, "We have a had a big bottle at home for the last year, which you have never ever tried!"  ;D    (We did get a new bottle to restock)
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

If you get out and about a lot (as I imagine you do), you’ll start to find your other local Americans.  We are everywhere.  Literally.
