Funny how we all tick.
Packrats and minimalists attach value in different ways. I am sentimental, like my Mom, and I'm a packrat, but I'm not a hoarder. I don't keep stuff for the sake of it. I keep stuff that makes me smile and feel good.  I value good storage and ways to keep my house tidy.
I'm lucky and glad that the company I moved over for paid for shipping my stuff, but I would have paid for it myself if needed.  My musical instrument collection alone was worth a shipping container as these things don't go in airplanes too well.    It's silly to sell musical instruments usually to get a much cheaper price and have to buy again at a higher price.  My jazz trombone is from 1935 , has art deco styling, and very rare and full of a lot of sentimental value, for a lot of reasons. Despite being rare, it's not worth a lot of money though as a resale. And I would probably never find another one like it.     I have more stories about all my musical instruments just like this.
I only wish I had brought my vinyl collection, as I'm now having to bring it back in dribs and drabs from my parents in carry-on bags.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

My vinyl is the reason I got a shipping container. I'm glad to have it, but am not looking forward to moving it again!

We came over with two big suitcases each, plus carryons, plus big purses.  My carry-on was full of things like my  spices, sugar substitute (got pulled aside in SandyEggo by the scanner people for having that. Thankfully it was still in the sealed pouch and obviously a purchased item!), legal documents, flash drives with all our records, my laptop, and sentimental items wrapped in bubblewrap.  The first stowed suitcase had my old stove-top coffee percolator, a frying pan, some some pillowcases, photos (wall-sized),  a couple of towels, etc. The other stowed suitcase had a couple of pairs of each of the essentials - jeans, undies, socks, shoes, and more sentimental stuff. When we got to our hotel here we were on the fourth floor. No lift. Narrow stairs. Tiny room. We managed but were climbing over the suitcases.  ;D Schlepping them up to the room was a killer, though. If memory serves, I had the flu at the time. No bueno. But it all worked out.

We gave away most of the furniture, and a whole lot of other stuff I'd collected over the years before we left. I made MANY trips to the Salvation Army drop-off shop to unload clothing and household goods. AmVets had to come with their truck like four times to empty out our carport of the bigger stuff! I kept my books, my LP records, stereo, desktop, a few good pieces of furniture that could be broken down for packing, a vanity/dresser/bookshelf from around 1910,the Daughter's sewing/knitting stuff, some heirloom things, a couple of good-quality room-rugs, our quilts, my cast-iron cookware and kitchen essentials, etc., and boxed and shipped them slow boat. We got here in early May and the stuff arrived in mid-July, on schedule. In the meantime, Ikea provided what we needed. Basically furnished the whole place on one shopping trip the same afternoon we signed the lease. It was delivered for 25 quid two days later. (Felt sorry for the delivery guys, we're a few floors up!) We were hip-deep in cardboard boxes for a while there.

I kinda enjoyed the "camping out" bit, ordering pizza in.  We're now well-settled and starting to have too much "stuff" again - no room in my kitchen for anything else without getting rid of something. Most of it has been procured from charity shops, but it adds up. Plus we did have a lot of boxes of kitchen "stuff" - entertaining sets, etc., that we wanted to hold onto. The Daughter just loves setting out a "company" table of food and having people over. Thankfully we have a nice place and it's good for that, so she can now.

The transition to "settled in" came a lot faster than I expected - it was a few months, rather than a few years. Which is good!  ;D

I'm different than a lot of you.  I wish I had brought MORE.

Had I known that I wouldn't be able to find high quality furniture here, I would have absolutely moved what I had.

I do buy lots of stuff second hand.  But I still wish I had brought my USA bed.  Oh how I long for that bed!!!

Thankfully between my carry-on and my husband's, we were able to get my vinyl over...but I agree that I'm absolutely not looking forward to moving it ever again! lol

I don't wish I brought "more" necessarily, but I do wish I had prioritised certain things differently. Thankfully, the rest of my stuff is all in storage with my family, I just need to start taking it over little by little.

Mine is just furniture.  Cost a fortune to replace stuff and it's not nearly as nice as what I had.

Though I wouldn't have been able to keep my bed frame after I met my husband.  It had a footboard and we can't have one with him (as he doesn't fit on a bed).

You need to get one of those extra long beds! haha our friend has one of those (but it's a pain to find the mattress/sheets for them!). I've got a few bits of furniture still back in the US, but it'll be a while before I can afford to ship them over. It's really just one coffee table from my grandparents that I wouldn't be able to get a duplicate of. It's totally solid wood and has a checker/chess board carved into it.

You brought your vinyl collection over in your carry-on bags? And it arrived okay?  That sounds scary to me.

I wish I'd fully appreciated the climate differences and brought different clothes... or just left a lot of I'll-never-wear-that-again stuff at "home" to make room for things I didn't appreciate the cost of replacing over here.  I kind of thought I'd make more trips (any trips!) back to collect things I left behind, but that doesn't seem to be happening for me.

I did get a couple of games shipped to me that I used to play with my dad.  Those were probably the most important things, so I've come to terms with not getting the rest of my stuff.

I've been bringing my vinyl collection over slowly in carry on bags and it's fine. It's heavy as hell. We wrap in bubble wrap.  Slow going, as I have a big collection.

Yeah, I think he could fit on an Emperor sized bed.  He's not bothered that he doesn't fit though.  I am bothered.  LOL!  Mainly because he has to keep the sheets on his side untucked and I like mine tucked.  Too bad a bigger bed wouldn't fit in our bedroom.  I do hope that if we do an extension, we can get a bigger bed.  I think he'd enjoy fitting on a bed.  LOL!

My tall hubby can't fit on a bed either. We have no footboard and I hate sheets tucked in, so we are happy.

I preferred it in my carry-on bags because I knew what was happening with it and I was in control of it (and it didn't really get weighed at that time to make sure it weighed a certain amount LOL - did the same with books as well). When they go in your luggage (or even shipped in a crate), I can't guarantee I know what is happening with that bag/box/whatever. They were the perfect size for one of the carry-on's I had so I just used that and cushioned it out with clothing.

Even though I do go home once a year, I'm rubbish at remembering to take stuff back with me (as I always want to take *new* stuff (food/ beer) back with me vs old stuff).

hahah once he sleeps in a bed he fits in, I guarantee he won't want to go back! lol
