Do any of you use a dash-cam?

I kind of fancy the idea of one, but there are so many on the market, and i really don't know what i'm looking for.  The ones i've looked at online have been in the £50 range, and they all seem much of a muchness.  I've been shocked, though, by the battery life of 0.5 hours!!  What good is that if your journey is more than half an hour?  ???

I don't have one but it looks like they plug in to your cigarette lighter socket or can be hard wired.

This back up scammer seems to have her lawyer with her:

I’ve had one for about 4 years. I love it, not just for recording near misses and such but for capturing scenery that I miss as the driver. While driving if my wife sees something, like a grizzly bear at the side of the road while driving in Canada she can press a red button on the camera, and that 3 minute clip is saved.

Very easy to use, plugs into a cigarette lighter socket in the car so battery life is irrelevant really.

I was listening to a news quiz podcast a few weeks ago and there was a question about a news item I had missed. A car was involved in an accident and the driver gladly handed over his dash cam to prove his innocence. The police however looked at all the footage on the dash cam which showed him a couple of hours earlier pull up to a line of shops, leave the engine running and then rush out of the car with a baseball bat, smash a shop window, grab some swag and jump back in his car and drive off.

That's really one of the main reasons I want one... just to capture the scenery that I might miss, or be unable to snap a pic of when im driving.  But from the reading I've been doing, it seems a standard level dash-cam isn't good for this, and that I should invest in something like a Go Pro instead.  I don't think I want to spend that much money to satisfy a mild curiosity.

I have never owned a Go Pro and having just looked at the price of them I would think that they should be rich in features. The video quality on my dash cam is excellent with a very wide view and the primary purpose is to capture incidents and yet be as unobtrusive as possible. I have mine set to turn off the display 60 seconds after turning on the engine and I have it positioned to the left off and behind the drivers mirror

Thanks for the info.  Could you tell me which make/model you've got?

We have one in our nice car but really need to get one in ALL our cars to be honest!

Some you can plug into the cigarette lighter of a car to power it. They are REALLLLLY good to have because of how crazy some drivers out there are and it's nice to be able to provide evidence if somebody hits you. We got ours on Amazon (not sure what price range it was, but I can find out).

I have the NextBase 312 which includes GPS (you can choose to have speed on your recording) but my sister has the NextBase 112 at half the price and she loves it. (£50 at Argos)

Which? has an article on choosing a decent dash cam and what to look for. Some have "parking mode" which will capture an incident if your car is hit while parked without you in it.

Yeah there is such a wide variety out there to choose from.

I've been meaning to get one myself. A lot of times, if you find one you think you like, take the manufacturer name and model number and search YouTube and most likely someone has posted a video of their own from that type and you will be able to see the video quality. Definitely get one you can plug into the cigarette lighter. I would be nervous about having one that is left up in my window 24/7 for fear someone would break my window and try stealing it. You will also need to buy a memory card for it. The larger the card, the more time it can record. Those are fairly cheap now-a-days as well.

Got to get one now.  Had a moron in  a BMW cut across 3 lanes of traffic to make an exit and came within inches of killing me.  Why is it always a BMW?
