I'm in Scotland too. Welcome!

Be prepared for a shockingly low pay rate regardless of the industry you are in!

Ksand24 - yes, he's up at Lossiemouth. It is a really nice area, I love it! What does working in the operations wing mean? I've never really known anyone in the military before my boyfriend so I'm still figuring out how everything works  :) Thanks for the advice about working on base, I'd assumed I wouldn't be eligible for any of those jobs before I became a citizen. There was a posting recently about them needing someone to help with the dogs there....

Nctami72 - Yay Scotland! Less yay to the low pay rate, but at least I'll be going in prepared  [smiley=laugh3.gif]

Cool :). What does he do in the RAF?

To be fair, I don't know a massive amount about the different military wings, but the Operations Wing manages the airfield and its supporting services. It includes the Air Traffic Control, Fire Section, Meteorological Services (that's us), Operations Support, Standards and Evaluation Squadron, RAF Police etc. I'm not sure if the flying squadrons come under Ops Wing though, or if they are separate.

Oh, actually, I'm not sure what eligibility is required, but I was thinking of things like civilian office jobs (like HR), or jobs in the shops, cafes, gym etc.

Oo that job sounds like you get to do a lot of interesting things! He's an armourer. He used to be on the squadron, but they just did some rotating a couple of months ago and he's been in the bomb dump. I will definitely keep an eye on the civilian jobs!

If you've got loads of gumption, you could always make your own job having to do with computers.

You could make apps for the app store

You could open an Internet Cafe and do fortnight birthday parties .

You could sit at home and do surveys, Amazon mechanical Turk and task rabbit stuff

You can get pilots to import American foods and open a store online

You can implement my fantastic 3 d printing bit coin idea, although that peaked some months ago.  You could be ready for the return of the fad

Interesting - I don't know much at all about armourers or the bomb dump, as I mainly work with air traffic control and the pilots :).

I'm actually inclined to agree with this for the most part. The only part that I would be weary of is whether or not you *need* the money. If you will be looked after on-base and not really desperate for a job to make ends meet, starting up your own business might be a bit easier (assuming you do it digitally and not with an actual shop front). If you're needing the paycheck, I would think that maybe you could create your own job on the side for a hobby until you're in a position where you know it'll be profitable (considering you would be able to do it out of your own home). It all comes down to what you need to do vs what you can do (and what you WANT to do).
My, how time flies....

Haha, thanks for the ideas, I love the creative thinking! I’m planning on getting a retail job as soon as I’m settled, so between that and my then husband’s pay we should be able to make ends meet. Finding a more creative way to make money will be a great side project once I don’t have planning moving continents to occupy my time  :)
