I totally forgot about Basil from The Great Mouse Detective!  That movie used to be one of my favorites.

I only knew to pronounce Basil, the name, as baah-sil from Austin Powers.  But the 'erb will always be bay-sil!

In my experience, those are classics too. 

To be fair, I was also taken aback by "a curry" when I heard it for the first time.  I've grown up with it being referred to as Indian, and initially, I had no idea what DH was talking about.

confession time : I'm not very good at pronouncing my wife's name.  You really have to put on an over the top French accent and I just can't do it.

I have a spanish first and maiden name. For years, the husband has never been able to call me correctly. It took Harry Potter to get him to put the accent and the pronunciation in the correct way on my maiden name. Apparently, a character was called “Salazar” as a first name. It was weird to hear him finally say it right as he would read it to our kids. Our daughter has a spanish first name and screws it up every.single.time. To be fair, no one pronounces it correctly nor spells it right either. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Now I appear regularly in my friend's curry blog and i'm picky enough to prefer the Pakistani and Afghani curries to the Indian ones.

From curryless to curry expert! I'll have to refer to you for suggestions then because I think my curry knowledge is still simple and limited. Only other curry I have experience with is Thai curry.

Challenge accepted! I can't wait until we Skype later on once he's home from work. If I had to guess I think it's going to sound something like this:
NICK-uh-RAG-EWE-uh.

Here's one for you all: Jalapeño.  Hubby says: GIAL-uh-PEE-no.  I tell him that it's Spanish so there's no way that is a hard J and that the tilde over the N creates a "nya" sound... but he cares not. LOL!!!

Yeah, don’t get me started on how Brits pronounce ALL Spanish words.  I make a mean paella.  I at least have my kid and husband saying it properly now.

My husband recently met KissofDeath for the first time.  He though she was British until she called herbs “erbs”.  He then said “Are you american?”

I'd think Texans would pronounce it correctly as there is such a large latino population there. In Southern California, I've never heard anyone pronounce it with the hard J.

Sometimes I feel bad for correcting but I tell him that if he is speaking to an actual Spanish-speaking person, he is gonna sound silly. I'd want him to correct me if I was saying something wrong as well. I just believe if we take a word from another language, we should at least try to pronounce it as it is meant to be pronounced. That being said, I'm sure there are a bunch of words from other languages that I botch... Let me ponder this...

Now that California city name thing is strange... Because when I first moved there I thought many of the cities would be pronounced as they would in Spanish but you're right. San PEE-dro. Los Feliz is pronounced "Loss FEE-liz." And even Los Angeles is not pronounced how it would be in Spanish. Excellent point!
