the UK post office imposing me a huge tax on personal goods
« on: September 10, 2018, 09:23:03 PM »
Hi All,

I have a question related to paying duty on personal goods imported to the UK.

I received my UK spousal visa and before leaving the US I posted several boxes of my clothes from the US to the UK. I have now received letters from parcel force saying I need to pay import duty before they will deliver the items.

Having done some research it looks like I need to do the following to get the boxes and get the charges refunded.

1) Pay ParcelForce the fees to obtain the items.
2) Fill in a ToR1 form to obtain an authorisation code.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-for-transfer-of-residence-tor-relief-tor01

3) Use this authorisation code when applying for a refund of the fees using form BOR286

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vat-customs-dutyimport-vat-relating-to-imports-by-post-bor286

Could someone confirm this is the correct approach?

Thanks in advance, and thanks again for all your help the visa application!

Did you apply for the TOR before moving? If yes, you can provide the post office that number. If no - I believe your process is correct.
