Dumb question about US passport control
« on: December 14, 2004, 02:16:06 PM »
Hi. I have a question about passport control in the US. I never know which line to go through--visitor with DH or seperately through citizens.  The first time we went back, we both went through visitors lines, but I was told off as I was supposed to go through citizens.  Then last time we flew in June, we went through separate lines and he was told off that I had to be with him.  Is there a way you are supposed to go?  When we come back we always go seperately and I go through the non-EU line and I have never had any problems.

Thanks!!

When going into the US, you're supposed to be bring him along in the citizens line. Same in reverse. You're to go with him through the UK cits line.

Until you're standing behind someone who isn't white, then it gets "mysteriously" slow.

I had never thought that we could go through the cits line together?!?    Will they be able to do the new fingerprint/photo thing in cits line?  Chicago is normally never a problem in terms of length of queue, but I just don't want to have to queue twice after being sent to another line.

I don't know. I "think" that at Newark the cits line didn't have the fingerprint equipment, but then I can't be sure since it was late and I wasn't looking. Maybe ask when you get to the line. But in a way it makes sense that the DH goes with you, since its his "proof" that he's not planning to immigrate at that moment.

We were in Boston for Thanksgiving.  I'm American, husband British.--we fill out one US customs form (the rule says one per family).  I have taken to asking an offical looking person which line to go to each time we travel to the US.  Rules seem to differ depending on homeland security and the particular airport...  This time around, they told us both to go to the non-US line.  Last trip (O'hare), they sent us to the US line.  Go figure.  My advice: just ask politely before you get in line!

In the UK, my husband always goes through the Non EU line with me (He's nice that way).  This time around, the resident/visa holder line was open!  Imagine that!

Hope this helps,

Flying into DFW, both were allowed to go thru the US line. Going through Las Vegas, two separate lines...LAX, same way. In the UK, I always went through the UK line with DH.

I think it depends on the  US airport, IMHO......and their local policies. I always just ask......which means jumping the queue to ask and getting lewd looks :))

Its certainly not a dumb question....I never thought about it....we always go through the non citizens line together (BWI and LHR). I think we will continue unless we run into a problem.   ;)

I always worry that there will be a problem with him getting in.  He is a dual citizen and I know other dual cits who have had their records called up and have been questioned as to why they are travelling on their british passport.  I prefer to go together through the line in case there are problems.
I will try both of us going through the cits line tomorrow and see how that works.

In SF, all the passport control officers have fingerprint/photo capabilities.  I only know this because a Russian woman went through the US citizen line and I got stuck behind her.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

We always go seperately as well.
The signs tell you what to do... if you are US, you go here, if you are a visitor, you go there.
It never occurred to me to try and do anything other than follow the instructions.
