How long for self-assessment to be processed?
« on: September 19, 2018, 06:19:55 PM »
So, I sent my self-assessment in via paper in April. It's been about five months now and I haven't heard anything at all. When I log into my online account it shows that they received it, but that nothing is currently due and there's nothing seemingly processed yet.  Is that normal?

With me it was a lot quicker than 5 months and I knew it had been processed because logging in online showed the payments due. I had a sum to pay by Jan 31st for that year’s return plus estimated taxes for the following year. The online system also showed how much I had to pay by July 31st for the 2nd estimated payment.

Hmmm. I guess I'd better contact them, then. I would have expected some kind of official notice, one way or the other. (?)  Do they send you something?

I did mine online.

Since you did yours by paper did you owe them money, did they owe you money? Either way has any money been transferred or checks cashed?

I would call them for sure.

Nan, I do mine on paper. One year it was taking an age so I called them and found out that they do have a service standard, I can't remember what it is but I'd be surprised if you were still within it.

Call them first thing, the wait time is shortest then. You can be waiting upwards of 40 mins to get through in the middle of the day.

You will be sent your calculation on paper but you'll see how much you owe them or they owe you  on your online account before that gets to you in the mail.

Well, no, according to my calculations I did not owe them anything, based on using the treaty to exempt my California pension. I haven't sent them any money because they haven't said I needed to.

As Larrabee says, you should be able to see what you owe online, even when sending a return in by paper, so I’m afraid a phone call is required.

Ah, ok. I expected to get something in the mail. It might be that they sent something and I just didn't get it - we had a lot of trouble getting mail over the summer (a lot of it just went AWOL).  I emailed their help service - tried to use webchat but it doesn't seem to be working. I'll wait a couple of days, and if I still haven't heard I'll phone them.

Their online system does say that I owe nothing. But I don't know if that's the default position on the system, or if that is their "after processing" info.

I didn't have enough  taxable income to exceed the standard allowance for that year (2017/18).  So I don't think there would have actually been any tax due. But if there was, I'd want to get it paid prior to 31 December so I can carry some of it back to cover my 2017 IRS taxes, and wipe my 2018 IRS taxes. I am afraid that if they don't tell me about tax owed until after 31 Dec and I haven't paid it by then, I can't use it as a credit against my IRS taxes for 2018.

I'm drawing social security now, but the amount of SS I'll have received for 2018/19 isn't going to exceed the standard allowance (although subsequent years will). If they decide my pension is taxable, I'll owe a chunk-o-change. I just don't want to be in a position where I'm double-taxed at some point. So I hope they'll tell me what they do or to not want, sooner.

I have always filed by paper, usually in mid June to late July. HMRC mail a detailed summary of how they have calculated my tax which has always arrived each year in mid October to mid November.

Hmmm. Well maybe it's on the way then. It's been just under 5 months. This is what is online (attached).
Is this page what appears online before they calculate tax, or only after?

That's the before. Mine looks like that at the moment, I am still waiting.

No, but note also that I never go online for anything financial or tax related.

The summery sent to me is a breakdown by:
Foreign Income (US and EU).....................Amount
UK Interest......................................... .........Amount
UK income........................................... ........Amount

Minus Personal Allowance........................Amount
Total on which tax due...............................Amount

Tax on income
Income .....Amount @ 20%.........................Amount
Income......Amount @ 40%.........................Amount

Tax on Interest on savings
Nil rate.............(500)
Higher rate (40%)........................................Amount

Income Tax Charged..................................Amount

Tax deducted via PAYE or prepayments...Amount

Total Income Tax due................................Amount

It's a two page letter, in my case, titled Self Assessment: Tax Calculation

OK, I phoned them last week (on the 20th) and they said I'd have some sort of response by the 27th. I've got nada.  I just sent a message via their website asking when I could expect to know. So far nothing has changed on the website.

I do have another question you might know about - when I log onto HMRC self-assessment, it lands me to a business tax account. I do not now nor have I ever had a business.  There's a link on that page to my personal account which is where I go to find my personal tax stuff (that isn't showing up there, other than it was received by them 27 April).

Does everyone have a business acount page as their landing page? Or is something with my account honked up?
