Miniature orange (calamondin) tree
« on: September 29, 2018, 10:12:40 AM »
Curiosity got the better of me.  I've been tending my husband's tiny tree since it nearly died before our move (it was in the box room being neglected), and this year it started bearing fruit again... so I Googled to make sure they're edible, then tasted one.  Google is right: totally edible, but so tart that you probably wouldn't want to eat it.  Tastes like someone bred an orange and a lemon together and all the sour of the lemon came through.  Lovely aroma, though!  I might use the juice in my sour mix.

Might be nice used on fish too! Tart has its uses, just not great eating straight. :)

Good idea.  I'll try it next time we have fish.

Or as a marinade for some Mexican chicken dishes...

Sounds like it would really well in mojo (marinade).

I just looked at a recipe... I think it would work!  Lime (the usual ingredient) has a slight bitterness that lemon doesn't have, and these miniature oranges lack it, too... plus, these little things aren't very orange-y (or very big).  But they would still provide a nice sharpness.
