Amusing speech development
« on: December 15, 2004, 11:21:24 AM »
Our Niall has always been a bit of an amusing baby, but recently I've been in awe of his speech development.

Baby's first word came at 10 months.  It wasn't ma-ma or da-da, or any such word as you'd normally expect as a baby's first word.  Instead it was 'yay'.  (Whenever we want to praise something he's done, we clap our hands and say 'yay' -- so that's where he's picked it up).  The next word was 'yuck' (think smelly diaper).

His favourite word sounds like 'bus-st'.  Don't let it fool you -- it means train.  We can hear the over-ground trains from our flat and every time he hears one, he says 'bus-st'.  He even says it when he sees trains, despite us trying to correct him with the proper word, he's dead set on 'bus-st'.

Whenever he's hurt himself, he says 'Ooo-ooo' (think Horseshack from Welcome Back Kotter).

After he's finished eating, we always ask him if he's finished.  Now he longer waits for us to ask.  He picks up his plate to hand to us and says 'fussed' -- his version of finished.

So, I've shared my little one's amusing speech, what about you?  What do your children say that you find funny?

I don't have kids yet but my Mom never tires of telling people her four faves from me:

First word - not mama or papa but 'ditty' for kitty (we had one).

Up in the sky - uppity kye

Suitcase - soopy casey

Anything and everything that could be pointed at - 'na dat' with my index finger pointing but curled up
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

This is from the other end really, but my son has a speech disorder and didn't talk until he was three, so..  He sure has caught up though.  Say what you want about the Scottish school system, but the other day he (he's 6), used the words 'deliberately' and 'apparently' in context.  lol.  And his current obsession is the show, 'The Winkest Link.'  He recites the show when he's trying to stall over dinner, using the family and couple of girls I think he has crushes on at school as the contestant names.

Invariably, it ends with, 'Mommy, you are the winkest link....goodbye.'  Then of course I do the whiney, behind-the-scenes, 'I wasn't given a chance, I was totally the best player, daddy had it in for me from the start,' rant that the losers do after being booted.  Joseph has no sympathy.  lol

The first thing my youngest said that everyone could recognise was "Mickey" - as in Mickey Mouse.  First trip to Disney was at about 6 months... :D

Ah..kiddie culture influence.  The first song I remember the kids singing was, 'Baaaba Bilber!  Tan we fissit??  Baaaba Bilber!  Ess we tan!'  (If it's not totally obvious to the assembled mommies, that's Bob the Builder ;)

Niall does that too but says 'dis'.

The other funny one appeared on Bon Fire Night -- 'bang-ah'.  Fireworks or anything that makes a sudden noise are called 'bang-ah-bang-ahs'.

My son Coby will be three on Dec 28. He has always referred to himself in the third person. "Coby's house, Coby's bed" it sounds so cute because he almost sounds like he's saying Goby instead of Coby. He also has quite a deep voice for a little kid. lol
Last week Coby was sitting on my bed while I was getting dressed. He blew me away! He said "Mommy have big boobies". Where did he get that from? lol
My eldest son whom is 9 now said to me when he was just 2 "Mommy, Im so frustrated" So weird. The kid has never to this day had a temper tantrum. He has always remained very calm. Its nearly worrying.

I can't wait for Philip to start talking! :) Other things i can wait on (like the crawling! god the crawling!) - but the words? I'm *really* looking forward to it. He's 8.5 months old now and Doesn't say anything EVER but oooooh and mmmmm, and those are the only things he's ever said.  :) So everything is either very interesting (hence the ooh's) or yummy (hence the mmm's).
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

Trust me - you spend so much time wondering how they're going to sound - and then you spend even more time wishing they'd be quiet!  ::)

Hmm, I've heard this said:

"You spend the first few years wishing they'd walk and talk, and then spend the next 16 wishing they'd sit down and shut up."  ;)

Ah, that was the one I couldn't remember. I called firewords 'boom flowers'!  :D

William, my six year old, used to have Mulder and Scully Action Figures. They were dubbed "Mulner and Skukky"

One of the cutest things was Ino yike. Meaning: I don't like it.  ;)

Our little guy who's three had some fun words in his early vocabular:

"nook" = clock

"Muck" = granddad

It was a sad day in our house when he finally was able to get his tongue around "granddad"...  We still call my FIL Muck!

Since my brother could not say Jessica when he was little, he called me ca-ca, which in Spanish is sh*t. Nice of him ain't it!
