We moved into our house 18 months ago and within the first few weeks we had a series of bulbs fail and every one had a different fitting so we’ve ended up with a box full of bulbs of different sizes and fittings. Thought we had them all until my daughter bought me a Phillips Hue smart bulb starter kit - 3 bulbs and the wireless controller to plug into our router. Yet another fitting! so we went out and bought 3 lamps with the appropriate fitting. I think the house finally has fittings of every size available.

The problem with getting bulbs with the wrong fitting these days is they're more and more often LED bulbs, which last practically forever!  I bought a pair of LED edison screw bulbs when my table lamp bulb blew.  Replaced the bulb no problem (I studied the lamp carefully before ordering).  Now I have a spare LED edison screw bulb that doesn't fit anything else in the house.  When is the one in the lamp likely to blow?  50,000 hours of use from now (read: never).

So true. As the bulbs in this house fail I am replacing them with LEDs.

Has anyone successfully found a dimmable LED for a halogen fitting?

Basically, I want these as an LED.  We bought some but they did NOT dim successfully.  Flashed horribly - definitely seizure inducing.   :o

I've gotten migraines from every fluorescent or LED dimmable bulb I've tried. Had to stick with halogen for those.

You're in an ideal situation there.  :)  Bulb in situ which'll last forever.. and a back up, just in case... what could be more perfect?!  ;D

See, larrabee?  This is what I was referring to when I said you always could find the bright side of everything.  You are amazing!   :D

If you need to convert the whole house to LED, I swear by Screwfix now, the stores are everywhere, you can get a 5 pack of 60W equivalent LED bulbs for 10 quid, not that harsh white light either, they paid attention to the colour warmth when making them..

Fully agree, we love Screwfix, there is one half a mile from our house. For a while we felt guilty about shopping online and picking up the order from screwfix instead of visiting our local B&Q 6 miles away until we discovered that B&Q owns Screwfix. It snowed at home today and even the rock salt I use on our steep driveway comes from Screwfix.

Kingfisher actually owns B&Q and Screwfix, amongst others.

I used to be a B&Q fan but they've increased their prices a lot in the last couple of years so I get most of my DIY needs from Screwfix now.

We spend a lot of money at Screwfix.  I can count the number of trips we've made to B&Q on one hand.  We go to timber suppliers when we need timber, screwfix for all the little fittings and stuff, and our big tools have come from Charnwood, Axminster, and ... er... eBay.  :)
