let’s talk about chili
« on: October 17, 2018, 08:57:14 PM »
So when I first came to visit my husband (my boyfriend at the time). We made some chili. He asked me, want some rice? I was like what?! You don’t need rice for a bowl of chili!!

I know it’s called chili con corne here. I just thought that was so weird at first. But it can see why they put it on rice, it’s like a thick curry.

So I’m here now, do I eat it with rice?! It is quite nice. But now I don’t know to eat it with a spoon or fork haha. This is just so stange to me. Anyone have something similar to this or had this same experience haha!!

No. My husband hates minced beef so I rarely make chili but I've never seen anyone eat it with rice here.

I've seen people eat it with spaghetti noodles in the states though.

I like it with rice, I never had it before I moved here but it’s really a nice combo

Chilli is almost always served with rice here, although sometimes with a pitta instead of or in addition to rice.  They think I'm weird because I eat chilli in a bowl, like soup, with no carb accompaniment.

I only eat my own chilli... every other chilli I have had in the UK has been full of tomatoes and other WRONG things.

At least it doesn't come with chips!  ;D.

My English friend made chili and it was fantastic. I told her I needed the recipe and she said it was a packet mix from Tesco.

No rice was made. Lol

I see chili served with tortilla chips at the pubs.

I think chilli is one of those things that is actually just a big stew and there are million ways to make it. There is definitely 'proper chilli' with just meat and chillies and then there is any other incarnation of the stew all called 'chilli'.

I make several different types of 'chilli' and have put in all kinds of ingredients anything from pumpkin or butternut squash, sweetcorn, tomatillos or hominy if I happen to have them, courgettes, all different kinds of beans and lentils, chorizo, bacon, etc.  Not proper at all, but always comes out yummy to me.  Albatross is probably shaking her head and tutting  ;) :P

I grew up in New England so very used to the 'chilli con carne' way and it never tasted different here to me.  I have had it Cincinnati style with spaghetti and onions and cheese and that's really nice.   But only had it with rice since moving here. But I like it.  But 9/10 I eat it like a stew with a spoon.

I've never gotten food on my underpants!

I've never made chili but was just looking at some recipes! It's nice and chilly here this morning and it would be perfect. I'm the weirdo that puts chips in chili, never had rice though.  :D

I am going to withdraw my statement about chips with chili!  ;D I love chips with curried sauce, it would be like that! Don't know what I was thinking, haha!   ;D

Not really any different than putting it on a baked potato, which is yummy!

Oh, I love chilli in a sourdough breadbowl.   And a chilli dog.  Mmmm....

My husband likes it with rice while I like it with cornbread. We alternate between rice and cornbread (when I can be bothered to make it lol).

The first time I ever heard of chilli con carne was in Home Ec class in secondary school, when it was one of the recipes we could choose to cook. That recipe had it being served with rice, same as the sweet and sour chicken recipe.

Until I lived in the US at age 20, I thought chilli con carne was always served as a rice dish, like with Indian or Chinese food.
