The first time I ever heard of chilli con carne was in Home Ec class in secondary school, when it was one of the recipes we could choose to cook. That recipe had it being served with rice, same as the sweet and sour chicken recipe.

Until I lived in the US at age 20, I thought chilli con carne was always served as a rice dish, like with Indian or Chinese food.
I thought chili con carne was chili with Fritos on top. Is it not?

Chilli Con Carne in the UK is usually considered to be chilli served on top of rice:

It's just regular chili in the US.

I swear it's just means "chili and meat" doesn't it?
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

'con' means 'with' in Spanish, so it's 'chilli with meat' :).

There used to be a place in Los Angeles that served chili with brown rice as an option as well. I've had it that way and I actually like it.They also had an option with rotini pasta. I think chili is one of those versatile dishes where you can do whatever you want. There was another chili place in LA which was my absolute favorite (closed because the owner died  :\\\'( )... and they had tons of different toppings. My favorite topping was CHOCOLATE CHIPS!! I know it sounds so weird. I was reluctant to try it but honestly, the best chili topping ever! They used the flat chocolate discs, semi-sweet - I can't remember what they're called. Anyway, it kind of reminded me of the Mexican dish called mole. If you like mole, you'll like chili with chocolate!  :D

I Google translated it to check. I thought it was with, but the Google told me it was and and I believed it. Silly me.

I'm making chili tonight with cocoa powder in it. And I'm making it beanless to lower my carb consumption.

I don't even like beans anyway. I'm coming to your place for tea tonight!

As a Texan, I APPROVE of this message.

As a Mexican-American, “chile con carne” is the appropriate spelling and it indeed means “chile with beef”. It is traditionally served with flour tortillas. It is a bit more like this:
https://hispanickitchen.com/recipes/chile-con-carne-red-chile-beef/

But British “chilli con carne” does indeed have whatever you want in it and served with rice and potatoes.

To me, it’s all good and enjoy it however you like.

Chili con carne is chili with meat.  (Your basic chili. Carne="meat" in Mexican.)  https://www.southernliving.com/dish/chili/chili-recipe-debate-with-or-no-beans

Basically a stew of chunks of beef in a very spicy tomato and chili sauce. Or, if you're poor, ground beef. Or if you're from New Mexico, sometimes pork.
