Spouse visa - old passport
« on: October 17, 2018, 10:24:42 PM »
Hello,

I’m sponsoring my wife’s spouse visa. Does anyone know if there’s any need to send in her old passport, presumably a certified copy of the photo page is acceptable?
Her old UK working visa is in the old passport. This is the only record we have of this. Does a certified copy of this page need to be sent?

Thank you for any help.

You should send every passport she has ever held so they can check her travel history.

The application form will ask her to list all her previous passports and state where they are now. Unless they have been lost or stolen, they should be included with the application.

Yes they will be returned. They cannot legally keep the old passports as they are the property of the United States government.

With the new system of sending everything to New York instead of Sheffield, I assume it is still the case that you need to send the actual passports and not copies, but it’s not really clear how it’s all working yet.

Some of the the advice you received here is incorrect.

You do not really need to send the previous passport at this stage  and her travel history doesn't matter.

If anyone is giving incorrect advice here, it’s you.

The UKVI website explicitly states in 2 places that previous passports need to be sent.

From: https://www.gov.uk/uk-family-visa/provide-information

You’ll need to:

-give all your names
-give your date of birth
-send your current passport or other valid travel ID
-send your previous passports

Hi, thanks again for the help. We’re going to send the old passport. I was getting confused about documents. It’s all happening very fast now after we spent such a long time collecting documents.
We’re applying from outside the UK and her previous visa has expired.

Quick question on the links you provided above...The first site says you need to provide two passport sized photographs and the second site you need only one passport photo. Which is accurate?

Just send one. It’ll likely be returned to you anyway because they don’t use it for anything.

The photo they use for the visa is the one taken at biometrics, so I’m not sure you need to send any passport photos at all, but it’s still in the guidance, so we suggest sending one just in case.
